Allen Hendricks Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 14, 2009.
Allen Robert Hendricks "Al H" 1937 - 2009 Al died peacefully at home surrounded by family and friends on Sunday, June 7, 2009. He was born December 13, 1937, in Grand Rapids, Michigan to Susan and Cornelius Hendricks. Al was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Gordon; and grandson, Joshua Hendricks. He is survived by his brother, Roger; and sisters, Doris and Arlene. Al is also survived by his wife, Karen and five children: Bob Hendricks (Mary Beth) of Grand Rapids, MI; Trish Hacker (Paul) and Jim Hendricks (Wendy), both of Bakersfield, CA; Ron Hendricks of Kirkwood, CA and Laura Murtha (Greg) of Truckee, CA, and their mother, Ruth Richardson of Bakersfield. Also survived by grandchildren: Elizabeth, Adrian, Sarah, Matthew, Katelyn, John, Nicole, Kyra, Michael, Dylan, Austin, and Garrett; great-grandchildren: Isabelle, Sophia, Gabriel, Jacob, and their mother, Marnie Hendricks. Al was a loving and gentle man, quietly strong, and the best father anyone could ask for. He loved to read and possessed a sharp, sometimes cynical, always thought provoking, non-judgmental and humorous view of the world. He was "Finer than Frogs Hair". Al was a friend of Bill W. for over 30 years. He was very active in the program; he loved sharing the life that he found, and helped hundreds of people over the years also become friends of Bill. No doubt he would tell us all that everything now is "Just Right". Special thanks to everyone who helped care for Al over the past few months, and Optimal Hospice for their loving care. Al will always be loved, never forgotten, and missed by too many to mention. Al requested no services. An open house celebration of his life with stories and fond remembrances, and also food (Al loved to eat!) will be held June 20, from 4-8 p.m., at the Kern County Shrine Club, 700 South P Street, Bakersfield.

Al I love you and will surely miss you, your gentle smile, sincere smile. I will forever cherish the moments that I got to spend with you the last month or so.... You told me that you were grateful to be able to say I love you and mean it, and then you told me you loved me. If only you knew how much that meant to me. Al I really meant it too, when I say to you that I love you. Thank you for being present in my many moments of sobriety. One day at a time.

See you at the big meeting in the sky.
Rarely has a person said "I love you Dave" and meant what he said, sincerely
I believe what Al said both inside and outside the meetings. Thank you to the Hendricks family for AL. Love Dave L.

Al, I will always hear your soft voice of encoragement and that gentle laugh of yours when I started to take myself too seriously... You will be with me always and I am sure many others. Thanks for sharing your experience, strength and hope with all of us. The world is a better place for having had you in it.

Go with God,

Al, you certainly will be missed because you were such a loving man; also you will be remembered because you will be visible to many of us in some material items and in some memorable sayings, but most of all by numerous "methods" of living life one day at a time without a drink. Your legacy lives on in many men and of course in many women; I am one of those women, Steve and I are better humans today due to the work you and Steve did for 20 years.

You know what, I actually sat in "your" chair last Sunday morning; now I know why you sat there, it is comfy and it is the coolest place, temp-wise, in that building that you referred to as "a little dump". I thought you were there because you were THE Man!! yeah right, I know you, that is not what you thought of yourself, man yes, but not THE man.

I could go on and on Al, you know I like to talk, I am sure that has been said to you a time or two :-)

I will keep talking to you even though you are not physically here, because you are here; I know you are looking down at all of us and of course at that "sweet young thing" and saying we are all "just right".

I love you bunches and bunches.

Al was my Dad. I learned a lot from him, but I think the most important things were the love of books and ideas, and the power of thought to change people for the better.
I'll miss you Dad. Please say Hi to Josh when you see him (as I know you will).

Hi Karen and all of Al's family
Al will be missed by a lot of people. I remember when he would always tell me everything is "Just right." Even when you new it wasn't and I would get so frustrated, but through the years I started realizing that it's true. Thank you Al for all your love over the years and being an icon for AA..you will be immensely missed. I love you Karen and a big hug for all your strength.

Al will be missed. If anyone ever deserved a statue in front of the count house, it was Al H. But that type of recognition was not what he was about. He is a great man and while he is gone the good that he has done will live on and on. I am grateful to have known him.

After moving here in 1981, I met Al and Karen. Together, they have "carried the message" with determination, gentleness, and a restored dignity. I am grateful for their untiring commitment to their friends, family, and community. My very best to you Karen. Al will be missed always.
