Alma Cummings Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 24, 2011.
Cummings; Patricia (Pat) It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend Pat Cummings. Pat passed away peacefully at her home in Port Alberni on February 22, 2011. Pat was born in Old Wives, Saskatchewan on March 1, 1924. After receiving her education in Emerson and Winnipeg, she continued to work and train as a dancer. She then met her dear husband Robert (Bob). They were married in Vancouver on July 6, 1946 then made their new home together in Port Alberni. Pat always was a person with great energy and creativity! She opened her own Dance School in Port Alberni in 1952. Pat was involved with so many aspects of the community. She belonged to the Sorptomist Club, a Gyrette, an original share holder in the Alberni Valley Curling Club, the Arts Council, Alberni Valley Theatrical Society, Director and Creator of Funshine (Port Alberni Theatrical Society), Teaching Tappercise at Echo for over 25 years! The studio that still runs today was specially built as a dance studio. The first one in Canada to have that distinction! Her dancers performed at hundreds of events in Port Alberni on Vancouver Island and on the Mainland. She was an artist, teacher and mentor to so many young men and women. She has touched the hearts of many people with her humour and sharing of her talent and ability to put on a really Good Show!
She is survived by her beloved husband of 64 years Bob; her son James Cummings (Saskia); daughter Alison Cowan (Bill); grandsons Christopher Cowan (Vanessa) and James Cowan (Emily); cousin Dorothy Calvert as well as her many nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
Predeceased by her mother Elsie Krause; father C. Handley and sisters Hazel Drakett, June Wenz and Lucille Ivanitz.

Please accept my deepest sympathies on the passing of Mrs. Cummings. I remember Mrs. Cummings fondly as my dance teacher. She encouraged a love of dance and helped me become more disciplined. The yearly dance shows were something I looked forward to even after I had finished dancing. She will be missed.

Mrs. Cummings was an inspiration to so many of us growing up in the Alberni Valley during the 50's & 60's. Pat Cummings introduced us to the world of dance and indeed to the much larger world of the Arts.
Thank you Mrs. Cummings for your generousity of spirit, for your sense of humour, for your creative energy, for your encouragement and for for sharing your enormous talent for so many wonderful years. You made a huge difference in so many lives. I and many hundreds of others will always remember you with gratitude, admiration and great affection.
Love to Bob, Alison, Jim & family

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Cummings and Cowan families.
I will always remember Mrs. Cummings as one of the most graceful and poised ladies I know. She loved dance so much that it was a joy to myself and all the many students she taught over so many years. It was a privilege to have been taught by her. I thank her so much for her love of dance and children and her wonderful sense of humor. It was wonderful that my daughter could also be taught at her school as well.

I was so sorry to hear that Pat had passed away. I want to tell you how important she has been to me. Having her as a Dance teacher many years ago, inspired me to become a P.E. Teacher and major in Dance and Gymnastics. I taught Dance in Vancouver High Schools, and am still Tap Dancing at 60!!

I always loved it when Pat would perform at the end of the annual recitals. She was so graceful and beautiful.

I know you have given her your support and love for the last several years as she struggled with life's circumstances. Thank you.

My thoughts and prayers are with you. I am unable to attend the service on Wednesday, but Mom (Lolly McLean) will be there. They have been good friends for so many years.

Sincerely,
Jill Ferguson (McLean)

Pat Cummings was a very influential teacher and mentor in my life. The last time I saw her was during a tap class that my mother was taking a few years ago. Pat had remembered me and invited me to get up and join the group, running shoes and all. I have many fond memories of all the years of dance. She will be missed dearly.

I will always remember Mrs. Cummings as a teacher, mentor, and extremely wonderful person. She taught me my first ever ballet solo when I was about 6 years old and it holds a special place in my heart as well as my own grandmother's. From the Ouellette family to the Cummings' and Cowan families, may Mrs. Cummings rest in peace and forever be remembered.
