Alvin Glick Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Feb. 9 to Feb. 13, 2022.
Glick, Alvin Louis "Al" 8/12/1926 - 2/8/2022 Jackson, MI It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Al Glick, beloved and respected founder, CEO, and Chairman of Alro Steel on February 8, 2022, in Jackson, Michigan at age 95. Al has been the leader of Alro Steel, the company he co-founded with his brother Robert, since June 1, 1948. There are many things Al will be remembered for, most notably his unmatched love for his family and the University of Michigan. He will be remembered for the company he has built, his passion for customer service, and the belief that teamwork is the key to the ongoing success of our company. Al leaves behind a vibrant company with a culture built on teamwork, integrity, honesty, and loyalty. Al's guiding principles for Alro revolved around the concepts he learned from sports. Al's entrepreneurial spirit led him to begin his own sports newspaper in the eighth grade. He worked as a sportswriter for the Jackson Citizen Patriot part-time for four years during high school and college. His love of sports taught him the value of teamwork. Through Al's foresight and guidance, Alro has grown to be a company many have chosen for a lifelong career. Alro is home to over 3,000 teammates providing metals, industrial supplies, and plastics to more than 50,000 customers and operating from 70 locations in 13 states. When asked about retirement, Al would respond, "I've slowed down to working part-time. I only work 12 hours a day." Al continued with, "June 1, 2048, would be our 100th anniversary and I'm thinking that's a good time to retire. Being here, getting up each day to work with our team just makes me happy. Why walk away when you still love what you do?" Al received many honors in his lifetime, including Metal Center News Service Center Executive of the Year (2000), Metal Service Center Institute President's Award for Lifetime Achievement (2003), Jackson Golf Hall of Fame (2003), Jackson Area Manufacturers Association Heritage Hall of Fame (2005), Jackson Bowling Hall of Fame (2005), Jackson High School Ambassadors' Award (2011), Jackson Citizen Patriot's Citizen of the Year Award (2012), Michigan Manufacturers Association Lifetime Achievement Award (2018), and Spring Arbor University Faith F. Small Community Faithfulness Award (2018). Al had a lifelong dedication to philanthropy. He learned from his Father, Louis Glick, the value of giving back to the community, and he loved nothing more than helping kids. He helped start Jackson Southwest Little League Baseball (1956), built the Louis Glick Community Baseball Field at Jackson High School (2009), started the Al Glick Youth Football Camp (2018), and most recently funded the new indoor athletic facility currently under construction at Jackson High School, the Al Glick Athletic Center (2022). Anyone who knew Al was aware of his love for the University of Michigan and especially the football program. He and his family helped fund the Al Glick Field House (2009), C.S. Mott Children's Hospital Coach Carr Pediatric Cancer Unit (2011), and the Chad Carr Pediatric Brain Tumor Center (2016). In addition to these major gifts, through his foundations, Al supported many organizations across the country focused on youth sports, manufacturing education programs, children's medical research and grief support. His love for giving inspired and touched many people. Al is survived by one son, Randy (Rhonda) Glick and their children, Janson, Jessica and Joshua; one daughter, Valerie (Terry) Banning and their son Jordan Hawley, and their grandchild, Skyler; nephew, Carl (Denni) Glick and their children, Lori (Larry) Burke, Brian (Carrie) Glick, and Steve (Karen) Glick, niece, Sue (Dr. Richard) Weber and their children, David (Anne) Weber and Timothy Weber; niece, Debby Glick and her children, Aaron Glick and Hilary (Dr. Aaron) Dommu; nephew, Gary (Diane) Glick and her son, Jason (Amy) Leonard; other surviving family members include, Sue Winski, Randy (Linda) Winski, Mark (Nancy) Winski, and Debby Winski. He was preceded in passing by his parents Louis and Sadie Glick; one brother, Bob (Rose) Glick; two sisters, Agatha (Mort) Winski and Edith Glick; and one nephew, Barry Glick. A private family service will take place and Al will be laid to rest at Temple Beth Israel Cemetery. A celebration of his life will be announced and held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial contributions to C.S. Mott Children's Hospital (https://www.mottchildren.org/giving) or to Henry Ford Allegiance Health (https://www.henryford.com/development). Please visit www.hamptonfuneralhomes.com to sign the guestbook and/or send a condolence to the family. Even in his last days, he was coaching, teaching, and thinking of others. Al is irreplaceable and will be truly missed. However, his legacy lives on in Alro and its people.

Two things about Mr. Glick have made an impression on me: he helped people he didn´t know, would never meet, or from whom would never receive thanks. Second, the words others use to describe him (humble, gentle, silently strong, etc) are truly the qualities of legends, so far above what we see today from many leaders. He set an example for me and others to follow, and I lived a better life in Jackson because of him. Well Done, Good and Faithful Servant.

What a great legacy Al leaves behind. I also was one of the fortunate ones to spend 34 years with Alro and learned many valuable lessons from Al. Al would never pass by without stopping to talk (even though I was a Spartan!). I´ll say it for you Chief....GO BLUE

So sorry for your loss of a true giant in Jackson business community and U of M sports! I remember many pregame picnics with Al and his family just before the Wolverines won another big game! He was always so kind and humble and great to be around! He was very close to my Dad JC Perry and often provided us tickets for Bowl games or final four Basketball games. One of my fondest memories was at the year end Senior banquet for graduates leaving Ann Arbor and the Wolverines. A film of the highlights of their career was shown and then they had a few minutes to speak. It was so moving, that night 9 players got up and the first thing out of their mouth was "Thank you Mr. Glick for my scholarship to go to Michigan"! Many also said I never would have been able to play for Michigan, get this great education and amazing experience to be a Wolverine! There were tears in the audience that night that understood the amazing big heart and generosity of Al Glick and his Family, that made this all possible! God bless you all for this huge loss to us all and Go Blue, beat OSU!

Thoughts & Prayers to Randy and the entire Glick family. Al was just an incredible man possessing enormous generosity. He had a nurturing persona and everything he said and did was a lesson, both in business and in life. Everyone that had the good fortune of working with & knowing Al was better for all that he gave....I was one of the fortunate ones. Al and his Brother Bob were simply hard-working men that knew the value of what "unyielding customer service" meant. He was an awe inspiring man and will be missed...but not forgotten...Go Blue! The Chief had, beyond a doubt, the greatest impact on my life of anyone else. He was my little league baseball coach and he was the best. He loved us and he wanted us to be great. Later, I started working at Alro Steel when he encouraged me to be more than I thought I could be. I didn't know this at the time, but he did. He placed a tremendous value on honesty, integrity, hard work and excellence. I could never measure up, but he made me so much more that I would have been. What Al has meant to my family and me is beyond measure. Thank you to the Glick family for sharing The Chief with us. Love you, Al. Thanks.

Sending deepest sympathies in the passing of Al. My first memory of him is my most fondest. In my first few weeks on the job at Alro I was sent to Alro Jackson for orientation. During my time there I met a lot of key Alro people, Al being one of them. He spent time discussing how Alro started and where it is headed. He also gave me guff about being a Badger fan. He was approachable, compassionate, caring and a true leader. He will be missed dearly.
