Amos Hahn Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 15, 2020.
Amos L. Hahn, 95, of Worthing, SD passed away April 9th, 2020 under Hospice care at home surrounded by family.

Amos Leon Hahn, son of John and Frances (Voeltz) Hahn, was born on a farm SouthWest of Roswell, SD on June 24th, 1924. He lived with and helped his Father farm on farms at Roswell, Howard, Madison, Chester, and Colman until he joined the Navy in WWII where he served on the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown until the end of the war. He was a gun loader and his ship was offshore of Japan when they dropped the atom bomb on Hiroshima.

He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and went to and was a member of several Lutheran churches throughout his life.

He married Lorraine J. Flanders in Sioux Falls, SD in 1947. They lived in Sioux Falls until moving to Worthing SD in 1955. In 1961 he took a civil servant test and had the highest score and was offered a job with the U.S. Postal service as a rural mail carrier for the Worthing and Lennox areas until his retirement in 1985.

He enjoyed being a hobby farmer and went from raising mink in Worthing to raising sheep and chickens after he moved us 3 miles out of town. He also enjoyed growing a huge garden from which they shared the produce with everyone. He was a race car driver in his mid to late 30's at Husets Speedway where he won several trophies and was near the top of the leader's list for a few seasons. His favorite pastime was playing cards with family and friends. He taught all six of his kids to play cards and four of them played with him regularly. Wednesday was the designated card day every week but it wasn't the only day there would be card parties! He was particularly good at Bump and Pinochle which he played every day if he could! He had many a card party with his brothers where they would stay up half the night playing Pinochle.

He was a fierce protector and a great provider for his family. He was also a jack of all trades and did all the plumbing and wiring and even dug the well by hand for the house he built in 1963. He was so good at odd jobs that he got numerous requests to help others for anything from wiring a washer and dryer in, to fixing plumbing, to tearing down old structures. He also did all of the mechanical work on his mail cars. He designed and made a window insert for his mail car that he could just flip open instead of rolling the window up and down at every stop.

He was preceded in death by Lorraine, his Parents, two Brothers, and a Sister. He is survived by 6 children. Linda Stowsand (Dale), Terry Hahn, Jeri Dougherty, Bonnie Peterson (Jeff), Wendy Dose (Charlie), John Hahn (Candy) and many many Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren AND EVEN two Great Great Grandchildren, six Siblings and numerous Nieces and Nephews.

Due to the Covid-19 situation, the memorial service is pending. The family requests that any memorials are sent to the American Heart Association in his name.

I remember Jenny and I going out to feed the sheep with Grandpa and he had a bunch of bottles ready and I think he had two or three in each hand and he gave us each one. Well I wanted two and he said no and I said please and he said well..... okay and he gave me two. Then when the babies came up and started suckling one knocked me over and my face went straight in the ground and Grandpa let out his funny laugh and said I told you!

I met Amos through Hospice very late in his life. It was absolutely fascinating to listen to his stories about his time in the Navy aboard the USS Yorktown. It was such a joy to be able to present him with the cap that was given to him by the director of the Yorktown Association, which is dedicated to remembering all those who served aboard her. He was a special man. My condolences to all of the family. His influence will live on through you all.

I only got to know Amos for 10 years, but I've heard many stories about him from my husband John Hahn, and I loved hearing Amos tell his stories of life events.Having him come to Canton on night when John was doing Karaoke was one of my favorite memories, he even got on the dance floor for a bit, and to see the smile on John's face having Amos there to hear him sing was priceless. His laugh was contagious and he saw humor in many things. Amos your family will miss you, and playing cards with you, but you are where you've wanted to be for many years and your legacy will live on through your children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren. Rest in peace.

I was hit hard on Monday the April 27th when I was recounting that he won one card game the last time he played cards. The last time......The Last Time........ THE LAST TIME! And the tears flowed.......and flow still.

I cant find the right words to get my memories out. Grandpa was the greatest man I ever knew, always had unconditional love for his family. I loved just sitting next to him listening to him talk about his racing days

I am so thankful for all of the memories I was able to share with my grandfather. I always looked forward to playing cards with him, and even at 95 years old, his wit was sharp! I always loved going to his house on Christmas Eve and celebrating with the whole family. Grandpa always had his "Christmas envelopes" ready. I am very lucky to have spent this many years with him. He will always be in my heart.

I had some great memories of him joining us for karaoke. He always told me I sounded like an angel. :) He loved it when a good dance song came on and he could jig his way across the floor. He was full of life and love. He will be missed.

I met Amos and Lorraine through CJ(John) in Corson singing karaoke. He was a delight to be around. He would dance around with all of us girls and we all had a great time. It was a joy to see him and Lorraine come out to watch their son and see how in love they were with each other. Now they can once again dance together. He was a wonderful man and I am pleased that I got to know him. He will be missed.

My godfather Amos was so unique, funny, and good natured! He was smart and could argue politics with the best of them, and he could slap a card on the table with force that it always stuck in my mind! He was wise and lived a full life with his family and he will be missed by us all! Rest In Peace godfather, till we meet again

Dad grew up in a very poor family. So needless to say Christmas was not an even remotely extravagant time for them. Because if that, it was so very important to him to give his kids a wonderful Christmas every single year. He had to work extra hours and scrimp and save every penny he could to be able to bring joy to us on Christmas. Something he never had.

I loved spending time with grandpa! He always had time for me. One night my wife and I brought him and grandma Chinese take out. Grandma was tring to pour some soup into a bowl and spilt some on the countertop. Grandpa slurped and licked the soup right off the countertop. He did not want it to go to waste! He taught me lots of things, How to fix tires, how to weld using a torch and coat hangers. He was not afraid to get his hands dirty and give something a try. After grandma passed I spent lots of nights playing cards and backgammon. I enjoyed every minute a had with him even when it should have been work.
