Amos Hahn

Amos L. Hahn, 95, of Worthing, SD passed away April 9th, 2020 under Hospice care at home surrounded by family.

Amos Leon Hahn, son of John and Frances (Voeltz) Hahn, was born on a farm SouthWest of Roswell, SD on June 24th, 1924. He lived with and helped his Father farm on farms at Roswell, Howard, Madison, Chester, and Colman until he joined the Navy in WWII where he served on the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown until the end of the war. He was a gun loader and his ship was offshore of Japan when they dropped the atom bomb on Hiroshima.

He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and went to and was a member of several Lutheran churches throughout his life.

He married Lorraine J. Flanders in Sioux Falls, SD in 1947. They lived in Sioux Falls until moving to Worthing SD in 1955. In 1961 he took a civil servant test and had the highest score and was offered a job with the U.S. Postal service as a rural mail carrier for the Worthing and Lennox areas until his retirement in 1985.

He enjoyed being a hobby farmer and went from raising mink in Worthing to raising sheep and chickens after he moved us 3 miles out of town. He also enjoyed growing a huge garden from which they shared the produce with everyone. He was a race car driver in his mid to late 30's at Husets Speedway where he won several trophies and was near the top of the leader's list for a few seasons. His favorite pastime was playing cards with family and friends. He taught all six of his kids to play cards and four of them played with him regularly. Wednesday was the designated card day every week but it wasn't the only day there would be card parties! He was particularly good at Bump and Pinochle which he played every day if he could! He had many a card party with his brothers where they would stay up half the night playing Pinochle.

He was a fierce protector and a great provider for his family. He was also a jack of all trades and did all the plumbing and wiring and even dug the well by hand for the house he built in 1963. He was so good at odd jobs that he got numerous requests to help others for anything from wiring a washer and dryer in, to fixing plumbing, to tearing down old structures. He also did all of the mechanical work on his mail cars. He designed and made a window insert for his mail car that he could just flip open instead of rolling the window up and down at every stop.

He was preceded in death by Lorraine, his Parents, two Brothers, and a Sister. He is survived by 6 children. Linda Stowsand (Dale), Terry Hahn, Jeri Dougherty, Bonnie Peterson (Jeff), Wendy Dose (Charlie), John Hahn (Candy) and many many Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren AND EVEN two Great Great Grandchildren, six Siblings and numerous Nieces and Nephews.

Due to the Covid-19 situation, the memorial service is pending. The family requests that any memorials are sent to the American Heart Association in his name.
