Andrew John Franzone, MD

Dr. Andrew J. Franzone ("Andy"), 88, of New York City, passed away peacefully at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital early on the morning of July 1, 2025.

Andy was born to Vincenzo ("Jimmy") and Giovanna Franzone on November 7, 1936 at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan. He spent his early life in both Manhattan and Queens, NY and was graduated from Xavier High School in 1954 and the College of the Holy Cross in 1958. Andy then attended Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons and was graduated in 1962. After completing his surgical Internship at Lenox Hill Hospital in 1963, Andy served in the US Army from 1963 to 1965 under the Berry Plan as a Captain in Korea and Somalia. He returned to the US to complete his Residency in General Surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital from 1965 to 1969. Andy completed additional training in Cardiothoracic Surgery at Good Samaritan Hospital and Children's Hospital of Los Angeles from 1969-1971. Andy then practiced as a Cardiothoracic Surgeon at Lenox Hill Hospital for his entire career, retiring in June 2021. Over this 50 year career, he dedicated his time and passion to saving a countless number of lives while also proudly and purposefully teaching and mentoring medical students, interns, residents, and colleagues. Andy and his colleagues pioneered open heart surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital and he was continuously thinking about and perfecting novel ways to improve patient outcomes.

Andy met his future wife, Dr. Margaret Anne McGuirk ("Peggy Anne"), at Lenox Hill Hospital and married Peggy Anne on September 7, 1975. Andy and Peggy Anne have lived in New York City through his passing. Andy is survived by his wife, Peggy Anne, and their three children, Jimmy, Andrew, and Jeanne, as well as three grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Salvatrice ("Sally"), and pre-deceased by his brother, John.

Andy will be remembered by many for his kindness and calmness and for his deep dedication to improving the health of his patients. He will be remembered by his family and close friends for his unwavering love.

A service will be held at Saint Jean Baptiste Church on Monday, July 7, 2025 at 10:30am.
