Andrew Kovac Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Feb. 28 to Mar. 2, 2023.
Andrew "Andy" John Kovac - also known as "The Kovac," "King Andrew," "Dante, Dante, Belafonte," "Andrew Kovachelli," and any number of other aliases he concocted over the years - died Friday, Feb. 24, 2023, at OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, following a short hospitalization that included mostly polite interactions with medical staff and occasional expletives for emphasis.

He was 85, which he claimed made him the oldest member of the Kovac family to date. Out of respect, we'll take his word for that.

Andrew was born Sept. 12, 1937, in Duquesne, Pennsylvania, to Andrew John Sr. and Mary Ann (nee Mishanin) Kovac, the oldest of three children. He graduated from Duquesne High School (Class of 1955) and the University of Pittsburgh before a successful corporate career with Montgomery Ward & Co., followed by stints as an insurance and real estate agent, newspaper circulation manager, and limousine driver. He made his home in the Chicago area, in Georgetown, Texas, and in Columbus, Ohio, among other cities.

He married Kathleen (nee Pagel) in 1962, and they had two children: Eric (Dr. Christine) and Marc (Alison). A third son, Anthony, died at birth. Andrew and Kathleen had an ugly divorce but eventually reconciled and were on friendly terms, which made for some really weird holiday get-togethers.

Andrew had an engaging personality and quickly made many friends wherever he went, including among his fellow residents at Seton Square North and the McDonald's on Henderson, where he was a regular. He took pride in his appearance and wardrobe, exercised every day, and would happily flex his muscles, if asked. He was generous, at times to a fault, and would give the shirt off his back if he thought it would help a veteran.

He bought many pairs of shoes from Gabe's on Sawmill, loved B.B. King and hamburgers, and preferred a big breakfast. He was a fan of Clint Eastwood and classic westerns but also watched every Hallmark Christmas movie broadcast during the holidays (though would never admit to crying or eating quiche). In true Kovac fashion, he was knowledgable about everything and had opinions on many topics, which he freely shared. Even in his hospital bed in his final days, he offered discourses on mechanization, the history of the Slavic people, and the development of the Blues in America.

And he liked to sing Mac Davis' "It's Hard to be Humble." Often.

Andrew was proud of his two sons and especially loved and bragged about his six grandchildren: Zoe, Nikolai, Levko, Andrew, Alita and Anthony, with whom he made many meaningful childhood memories. Andrew also loved and was close to his ex-wife's daughter, Amy (Joey Lovell) Caul, who considered Andrew a second father. Just the other day, she was telling her two sons, Greyson and Desmond, how cool Grandpa Andrew was.

There will be no funeral, per his wishes - he left behind a handwritten note strongly emphasizing this directive, adding, "Let me die in peace." Andrew made arrangements to donate his body to Ohio State University's Body Donation Program (https://medicine.osu.edu/departments/anatomy/body-donation-program).

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in his memory to organizations that support disabled veterans, as Andrew had a great respect for America's servicemen and women and regularly contributed to military nonprofits.

I am so sorry to hear of the loss and I am so sorry it took this long for me to see this. Andy was ine of my Fathers (God rest his soul) really good friends for many years. Andy was a Huge addition to our family. My Father loved Andy and missed him when he moved away. My Father was Robert A Lofendo Sr. Now those two knuckle heads can joke all the time now. God Bless you and God Rest Andy!

Andy was my friend and I miss him. I can´t remember when I first met him- I definitely remember him in early 2018. We both went to Lifetime gym at 5 a.m. Andy was always the first one there- often before the employees- and he would wait in his car in the very first parking spot. I would pull up next to him and he would turn his head, smile and wave. :) If it was warm outside, he would be standing outside the entrance. Andy had great stories- he lived so many places- Pittsburgh, Chicago, Texas, if not more places. I can see him using his favorite machine, moving his arms, practicing his punches. He was so excited when he learned I was a member at Title Boxing Club (which is not truly a boxing club!). He loved to tell tales of his boxing days! I remember when his Kia was stolen. He told me Mark Wahlburg would call him ("He was a really nice guy!") b/c he wanted to help him get a new car. Whether this was really someone else calling from the dealership. Or if it was truly Mark Wahlburg, I´ll never know. This story always made me smile. I often called Andy to check on him when I had not seen him for a few days, and sometimes he called me. One of my favorite memories is when he called me the day after Thanksgiving last year (2022). I was actually in Saint Helena (Napa Valley), having a glass of wine outside my hotel, next to the fire pit. We talked for probably 20 minutes, mostly me listening to him telling stories (he always told good ones!)
For some time Andy had told me he had lived a good life and when it was time he hoped people would just let him die! I was happy to see his actual birthday- for years he told us he didn´t remember the actual date, but that it was in September! :)
My sincere condolences to his family.
(I left a comment a few weeks ago, but it never posted, so I wanted to do it again).

Andy was one of those "one of a kind people" that God puts in your life every now and then to make you try harder to be a better person! He never missed an opportunity to make a friend or another person feel welcome! I am thankful that I got to spend time with him in the morning at the gym! He will be missed!! My condolences to his family!!

Andy was a regular member of the early morning workout crew at Life Time on Henderson, most days even seen exercising and warming up in the parking lot prior to our doors being opened at 5am. His workouts would often times take twice as long as they needed to spending equal parts lifting and socializing with the rest of the morning gymgoers, all of whom were on first name basis. Andy will be missed by all staff and members. Our condolences are sent to the family.
