Ann (Annie) Herbert Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 2, 2025.
Ann Elizabeth "Annie" Herbert passed away on February 22, 2025, in Bellingham, Washington, at the age of 83.

Born on November 20, 1941, in Seattle, Annie's thirst for knowledge shaped her life. She attended public schools across western Washington before studying at Fairhaven College for two years. She often said that her true education began when she received her first adult library card. A voracious reader with a keen curiosity about the natural world, she immersed herself in history, law, and justice-subjects that fueled her passions and pursuits.

Annie gravitated toward solitary work environments, finding fulfillment in clerical roles, particularly in accounts payable positions within both for-profit and non-profit organizations. Even so, it was through her volunteer work that she truly flourished. As a dedicated member of the Flying Squad at the Crisis Center, she devoted herself to social justice efforts, turning her deep commitment to fairness into action.

Nature was her sanctuary. In her youth, she hiked, sailed, and kayaked; throughout her life, she found solace in birdwatching and observing wildlife. Cats held a special place in her heart, and the ashes of three cherished feline companions will be joined with hers as a testament to their enduring bond.

Annie's interests extended to gardening, home decorating, music-especially Barbra Streisand-and all forms of art and literature. A fierce advocate for justice, particularly for women's rights, she rejected patriarchal institutions and sought spaces where she could be free from their influence. Spiritually, she embraced elements of Secular Judaism and Native Spirituality, believing herself deeply connected to the natural world.

She is survived by her husband, Thomas Swepston Herbert, her son, Michael Donnely, and her daughter, Susan Hernandez. She was predeceased by her parents, Loyal Stewart Tribbey and Ruth Irene Washburn, as well as her brother, Robert Tribbey.

Annie lived unapologetically as herself-brilliantly complex and fiercely independent. Those who knew her will carry her memory always; for those who did not have the chance to meet her: we are sorry for your loss.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made in Annie's name to the ASPCA.
