Ann Galbreath Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 10, 2007.
Graveside service for Ann Galbreath, 91, Astor, former resident of Port Orange, who passed away peacefully at home Thurs., April 5, 2007, surrounded by loved ones, will be 2 p.m. Thurs., April 12, at Edgewater New Smyrna Cemetery, with the Rev. Terry Holland of First Baptist Church of Astor officiating. Born in Jacksonville, Mrs. Galbreath lived for a time in Ft. Myers and grew up in Bradenton. Ann moved to Port Orange as a young woman where she worked as a teller for Florida Bank on Beach Street, downtown Daytona Beach, and served as secretary to the president of Florida Bank. A widow with two children, she married Marko Galbreath, a widower with three children, in 1948. In 1951, they opened Marko's Restaurant, later known as Marko's Heritage Inn, in Allandale. As a native Floridian, Ann was a descendent of Seminole Indians. As a child, she remembered going with her mother to the summer home of Thomas Edison in Ft. Myers, to sell him vegetables. Ann was an excellent cook who authored "Granny's Cookin' Book" in honor of her mother who was half Seminole Indian, and was instrumental in launching the family into the restaurant business. She created many recipes but her favorite thing to cook was homemade chocolate chip cookies for her grandchildren. Ann collected dolls, Blue Willow and cookbooks. She was a life member of Eastern Star Lodge #1 in Daytona Beach and a member of Forest Community Church in Salt Springs. Ann was predeceased by her husband, Marko Galbreath, Astor; daughter, Joyce Milliken, Leesburg; son, Dr. Marko Galbreath Jr., Daytona Beach; and granddaughter, Susan DelPercio, Miami. She is survived by her daughters, Barbara (Truman) Kennedy, Ormond Beach, and Ginger (James) Shaddix, Astor; son, Jim (Sarah) Galbreath, Astor; daughter-in-law, Emily Galbreath, Daytona Beach; 17 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren. The family wishes to offer a special thanks to Ann's grandson, James, and his wife, Lucy, for their unwavering care during her last years. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Hospice of Lake/Sumter, 12300 Lane Park Road, Tavares, FL 32778.

I do not remember very much about "Aunt Ann" except photos that I have when she was married to my Uncle Winston Watts many years ago, in the 40's if I remember correctly. I do remember she was a Grand Lady and always made me the Best Hamburger on this earth. In the early days all my family would meet at Marko's for Sunday meals. She will be missed but never forgotten by all that knew her and loved her.

I was saddened to hear of Ann's passing. She was one strong, spark plug of a woman with a never ending zest for life. I'm honored to have known her and have come to love her family as well. She was the ultimate story teller and I'm sure she'll be keeping all her family and friends in heaven entertained. My visits to our cabin across the street from her house will not quite be the same. But I will always remember her sweet voice, her soft skin, and her quickness to laugh. I'm certain she and my dad are swapping funny stories even now as I write this. The Beaty Family will miss you Ann. Rest in glorious eternal peace. Love, Sue.

Dear Barbara and Truman, Dede, Galbreath and Shaddix Families,

I was very saddened to read online of your loss. Even though I am no longer in FL, I try to stay abreast of the happenings in the city I still call home. Of course, when I saw Galbreath, I immediately thought of Marko's Heritage Inn and I was right. Many fond memories of Marko's and the great recipes of Mrs. Galbreath. I still have her cookbook that Dede gave me many years ago.

She was very blessed to have had so many loving family members. And, I feel certain that each and everyone of you will carry your own special memories.

Big hugs to you Barbara, Truman and Dede. I miss you, but my prayers are with you all at this time.

Dear Dede and Family,

We are so sorry to hear of your Grandmother's loss. May the Lord keep you and all of her loved ones in his guidance as you endure this difficult time.

Such a large family, so many that love and cared for her. She is in very good hands now and free of the pain that riddled her body for so long.

Thank God for Grandmother's. I can still taste those Marko's and Aunt Catfish cinnamon rolls of your Grandmother's. We'll have to get together soon and make some in her memory.

Take care and all of our love, thoughts and prayers to you and yours.

Grandma Ann,
A smile upon your face as you enter the gates of Heaven...now, free of the pain you endured.
You leave so many loved ones behind here on this earth, but we shall all meet again, someday.
Little did they know, they now have the best cherry nut pie, sugar cookie, and cinnamon bun baker, macaroni and cheese preparer, and those homemade rolls...mouthwatering! Those were the good ole' days, Grandma, and I will treasure your memory forever!

Selfishly, I will miss you...but, know you are in the loving and caring hands of the Good Lord above...being "Grandma" to everyone beside you. Relish in your reuniting with some of those that loved you the most...but, know there are many here still left on this earth that love you, and will miss you greatly. I, for one...and many more behind me.

Rest in peace, Grandma! I love you...but, hold great comfort in your memory and all of the very special times shared with you, and our private chats on the phone. I know...MiMi to most, but always Grandma to me!! I love you!
