Anne Hotchkiss Obituary

Published by Greenwich Time on Apr. 29, 2021.
Anne Whitney Hotchkiss
Anne Whitney Hotchkiss died April 10, 2021 due to complications of pneumonia. She was born January 16, 1954 to Joseph and Janie Hotchkiss of Greenwich, Connecticut. Anne will be remembered for her grace, positive outlook, wry sense of humor, tenacious zest for life, and above all, the never-ending joy and love she brought to all who were fortunate enough to know her.
A diving accident at the age of 13 forever changed Anne's life, leaving her a quadriplegic. Despite the many obstacles thrown in her path, Anne graduated from the Greenwich Academy and St. Andrews Presbyterian College. She then went on to enjoy a successful and impressive career as a systems analyst, starting out at the Reader's Digest and moving on to General Reinsurance, where she worked for 20+ years.
Wherever Anne lived, worked, or studied she forged deep connections and created a sense of community. She was known for organizing festive class reunions, fun family vacations, and other celebrations to mark special occasions of those within her circle. Likewise, Anne embraced all that Greenwich had to offer. She was the first to rally a group to attend a new exhibit at the Bruce Museum or Bush-Holley House or alert her friends to concerts on the Island Beach ferry. She especially looked forward to the Greenwich Town Party, where she would rock out with her friends until late in the night.
With a passion for water, Anne sought every opportunity to be near a lake or ocean. If not paddling on Squam Lake, you could find her on her daily jaunts at Tod's Point, taking in the sun at Island Beach, having a picnic dinner at the Greenwich Boat and Yacht Club, or visiting her dear friends in Rhode Island. Anne was also not without a streak of competitiveness and had a love of sports, particularly tennis. She was a formidable Scrabble opponent and was unusually good at picking the winning teams in Super Bowl and March Madness office pools
Above all, Anne had a deep love for her family and friends. She was especially dear to her nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and many godchildren, always showing interest in their achievements and celebrating the milestones in their lives.
Anne was preceded in death by her brother Noah Hotchkiss and her parents Joe and Janie Hotchkiss. She is survived by her siblings Polly Boynton (Perry) of Greenwich, CT, Jody (Kris) of Darien, CT, and Hannah of Ann Arbor, MI and her nephews and nieces, Jason and Sam Hotchkiss, Rachel Murphy, Meiko and Suki Boynton, Sophie, Graham, and Leah Hotchkiss, and Fin and Charlie Seely. She is also survived by her many beloved godchildren, a covey of cherished friends, and her dear companion, Bayard Gross.
A memorial service will be held in Anne's honor in the near future. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Anne's memory to The Greenwich Point Conservancy: P.O. Box 377, Old Greenwich, CT 06870 or go to https://www.greenwichpoint.org/join.

To the family of Anne: I´m so sorry for your loss. I was paired with Anne as her GA flower girl when she graduated from GA. I was in 2nd or 3rd grade at the time. All these years later, I remember her grace and kindness. She left a lasting impression on me. I was sorry to read of her passing in the recent GA magazine. Sending blessings to Anne´s extended family.

So sad to hear of Anne’s passing. I was a neighbor and a classmate at North Street School. We reconnected at our high school reunion a few years ago and had been playing Words with Friends online with Anne. She was amazing at this game. I will always remember Anne and will miss her very much. Blessings to all her family and friends at this most sad time.

To all Anne’s family...my heart is broken.

I met Anne when I was her nurse in pediatrics at Greenwich Hospital after her diving accident. She was 13 and I was 21....I came to know and love her and enjoy her so much during the months she was there.
I last visited her when her parents were still alive at the home on Park Ave.

I left the area many years ago and recently stated thinking about Anne. I am so sorry and sad to hear of her passing. My sympathies go to all her siblings....I remember how close you all were.

She was the most amazing and wonderful person.

Anne was a colleague at Gen Re for 23 years. She was a dear friend and inspiration. I treasure the time we shared together, the conversations at work and at lunch dates. I will miss her.

Anne had a special gift to shine light and cheerfulness with her smiling eyes. Like a magnet, she seemed to always be surrounded by adoring friends. I first met Anne through My daughter-in-law Laurie when they arrived for a swim pool party at my home. I am sure Anne would have loved to play in the pool with all the grandkids and her godchild, but not a tear, just laughter, splashing and a fun memorable time. Indeed, Anne was a very special gal in all our lives. I am sure many hearts are saddened. My sympathies and prayers to family and friends at the loss of such a treasure in our lives.

Polly and family, I’m so sorry to hear of Anne’s passing. I had the pleasure of meeting Anne at GenRe. She was truly a very special, wonderful woman, always smiling and full of joy. I always enjoyed bumping into you and Anne at Tod’s Point or Cos Cob Park. It was obvious that those were special places for her. My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this very sad time. Rest In Peace my friend.

Dear Jody, and all family and friends, My deepest sympathy to your family. I enjoyed knowing Anne as a companion to your mom, but also for the past 3 years, we played words with friends sometimes as many as 3 games at a time! We shared encouragement and friendship and I, as many, will miss her strength and character. My heart goes out to your family, Best Andy
