Funeral services for Anne Whipple Alderman Murphey who passed away on January 28, 2019 will be held at 11:00 am at Christ Episcopal Church, Macon, GA, on Friday, February 1, 2019, led by Rev. Cynthia C. Knapp, followed by Graveside Services at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Cochran, Georgia, at 2:00 pm. Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 31, 2019, at Hart’s Cupola from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
Mrs. Murphey was born on June 9, 1927, in Cochran, GA and graduated from Cochran High School, Valedictorian in 1944. She received a BFA in drama from Wesleyan Conservatory, cum laude (1948), a BA in speech from Wesleyan College (1949), and a Masters in Radio and Drama from Northwestern University in 1952. She taught at Waynesboro, GA High School, and then 4 years at Shorter College, as an Assistant Professor of Speech, and later taught English, Literature and Speech at Baker High School, Columbus, GA and Cochran/Bleckley County High School. She also taught public speaking at the UGA Center in Rome, GA and at the University of Kentucky at Henderson, KY.
Mrs. Murphey was preceded in death by her husband, Louis C. Alderman, Jr., President of Middle Georgia College, Cochran, GA; her husband, Flewellyn Plant Murphey, Vice President of Murphey, Taylor and Ellis, Macon, GA; her daughter, Dr. Amelia Anne Alderman of Macon, GA; her parents, Lucian A. Whipple and Lella Dillard Whipple of Cochran, GA; and by her brothers, Lucian A. Whipple, Jr. of Dublin, GA and Fielding D. Whipple, Sr. of Milledgeville, GA.
Mrs. Murphey is survived by her brother, Bennett Whipple (Nona) of Sandy Springs, GA, her sons, Louis C. Alderman, III (Trish) of Big Canoe, GA, Fielding D. Alderman, Sr. (Sheryl) of Lilburn, GA, Jonathan A. Alderman (Amy) of Macon, GA, her step-daughter, Valeria Rankin Murphey (Dick Bragg) of Richmond, VA; and her grandchildren, Adrian Alderman and Alison Alderman of Macon, GA, and Colton Alderman, Fielding D. Alderman, Jr. (Brooke), Kim Caitlin Branham (Ashley), Liz Snodgrass (Kevin), Lauren LaRochelle (Lee) and Louis C. Alderman, IV, all of Atlanta, GA, along with great grandchildren Cecelia and Collette LaRochelle.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, for the wonderful work it does and for curing her grandson Adrian Alderman; Christ Episcopal Church, 582 Walnut St., Macon, GA 31201; First Baptist Church of Christ, 511 High Place, Macon, GA 31201 and First Baptist Church, 202 Second St., Cochran, GA 31014 where there are remembered friends; First United Methodist Church of Cochran, GA, P.O. Box 7, Cochran, GA 31014, the church of her childhood, or to the donor’s favorite charity.
Anne grew up at Cochran Methodist. She joined Rome First Baptist; Columbus First Baptist; Henderson First Baptist where she taught young couples class; Cochran First Baptist where she taught the Dorcas Class for over 20 years; First Baptist Church of Christ, Macon, GA, where she taught the Fidelis Class, and Christ Episcopal Church, Macon, where she was a member of Daughters of the King.
She was Georgia’s Mother of the Year in 1977. She was a member of the History Club of Macon (past President), the Vineville Garden Club, The Georgia Trust and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. She was reorganizing President, Rome Little Theater, and President of the Columbus Little Theater, starting the fund to save the Springer Opera House. She also organized the Valley Players in Henderson, KY.
Anne was a member and served as the Georgia State President or Regent of the following: Daughters of the American Colonists (twice President of the Major William Horton Chapter), Daughters of the American Revolution (Past Regent of the Hawkinsville Chapter and associate member of the Mary Hammond Washington Chapter), Daughters of Colonial Wars, Daughters of Founders and Patriots of America, Georgia Mothers Association, and Magna Charta Dames. She was also a member of Colonial Dames of the XVII Century (Past 1st State VP, Chaplain, and twice president of John Alden Chapter), United Daughters of the Confederacy, and was Director of the Children of the Confederacy, Macon, Georgia.

So sorry for your loss. Mrs. Murphy was a special lady. I knew her from Carlyle Place. I worked there 16 years so I was fortunate to see her often. I will always remember her words of wisdom and her humor. I recall many a conversation with her that began, my Mama used to tell me . . . An interesting story always followed. I will miss her.

Mrs. Alderman Murphey was the only DAR State Regent whom I had the honor to be her Personal Page during her tenure at the Georgia State Conference. She was a funny and delightful lady. I always enjoyed seeing her at NSDAR Congress. She will be missed. Rest in Peace, Anne.
