Anne Smith Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Sep. 16 to Sep. 20, 2023.
Louisville - Died Thursday, September 14, 2023, after many years of medical challenges.

Born November 10, 1943, in Louisville, to Lillian and Howard Esarey, she graduated from Southern High School in 1961 and married her high school sweetheart, Jerry Smith. Anne was a gifted cellist and pianist with a degree in Music from Kentucky Southern College. She obtained a Master's degree in Early Childhood Education and Counseling from Spalding University due to a life-long love for and investment in children (of all ages). Anne combined this with a deep faith and love of the Lord and used those to forge a 60-year career in ministry. She served on staff in Education and Children's ministry at various Louisville churches (Green Acres Baptist, Shively Baptist, and Highland Baptist), and as Pastor of Newburg Christian Church. She was also an adjunct professor at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary for several years. Anne was a prolific, published writer of curriculum for children's programs and a sought-after speaker on child development, grief counseling, and poverty advocacy.

Anne was a tireless crusader for the voiceless and oppressed. She served as Executive Director for MUSCL (Ministries United of South-Central Louisville) for 15 years, helping found its Senior Wellness Center. Anne was respected by many politicians and business leaders as a formidable advocate for those struggling in poverty and was instrumental in the establishment of grant assistance programs between Louisville's Association of Community Ministries, LG&E, and the Louisville Water Company. She served as a deacon in her church, Jeff Street Baptist Community, and was an enthusiastic supporter of its ministry to the homeless. Anne loved all people and all of God's creatures (especially dogs). She was well-traveled, sharp-witted, highly competitive, and played a mean game of cards. Anne was given 30 "extra" years when a stranger signed the back of his license for kidney donation; this allowed her to richly bless the lives of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as "Grams".

Preceded in death by her infant son, Samuel Smith, and her husband, Jerry Smith. While their union wasn't permanent, Anne and Jerry remained close friends throughout their lives.

She is survived by her spouse and dear life partner of 21+ years, Jean Russell; her sister, Judy Richmond; her daughter, Leigh Anne Adams (Troy); grandchildren, Kendall Barnett (Mitchell) and Evan Gibson (Dakota); great-grandchildren, Kylie and Aspen Barnett, and Wesleigh, Callum, and Camdyn Gibson; nephew, Owen Baker (Suzanne).

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy to Jeff Street Baptist Community at Liberty (800 E. Liberty, Louisville, KY, 40204) or Best Friends Animal Society (5001 Angel Canyon Rd., Kanab, UT, 84741-5000).

A Celebration of Life memorial will be planned for a future date.

We love Anne so much. She is such a funny, vital, powerful, beautiful person that made our lives and the lives of so many others so much better for having known her.

Oh how I loved Anne! I remember her turning 50. We had a party and tried to get 50 people to sign up for organ donation. To this day we have a little rocking horse who "santa" Anne bought for our 2 year old Hannah. Today Hannah's two year old rides it! She taught me so much about child development. She taught me that Sunday school should be more of just a baby sitting experience. Rest well our sweet friend. You have been God's mighty servant!

I don´t remember when the first time I met Anne but was with many times with Harvey and my mom, Thelma Gafford. She was a big part of Harvey and Mom´s lives and always there for celebrations or whenever needed. She was a great person and a good friend to all who knew her. My thoughts and prayers go out to Leigh Anne, Jean, and all of her family and friends. She will be greatly missed.

Ann was a friend. I got to know her while I was the director at SEAM and she was at MUSCL. She was witty, charming and loved all God's creators. When SEAM moved to its new home, I didn't have a lot of furniture in my office. Ann gave me a check and told me to go buy a new desk, etc. I sat with her while she was recovering from surgery and got to love her dogs. I got to spend time at her home and her new house. I had not seen or heard from her in some time, but she will be missed. I loved her and her love of God. Jean, you have my deep sorrow at her passing but she loved you and talked about you a lot. We met Ms. Anne when we came to Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and joined Highland Baptist Church. She changed our lives! She freely offered joy and light and laughter and sarcasm AND love, love, love. Since 1991, when we returned to Canada, the impact of Ms. Anne continued in our lives through what she said, taught and more importantly - how she lived. Through the years, the people who have crossed our paths have received the benefit of our "Anne Smith Education"! She was one quotable broad! :) Early this summer she called to say that she and Jean wanted us to find them a place on the east coast of Canada for a month in August of 2024. After regaling us with stories of her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildern, the last thing she said was...even if one of us dies WE'RE DOING THIS! Jean, we would love to have you with us anytime...know that we are praying for you, Leanne and family in these days. Our Ms. Anne was a Micah 6:8 follower of Jesus...doing justice...loving mercy...and walking humbly with her God. We can't wait to see her again! "Even so, Lord Jesus, come." Love Greg, Margaret and Claire Geldart, Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada
