Anthony Boer of Calgary, passed away on January 9, 2018 at the age of 91 years, after bravely fighting dementia for the last months of his life. We have great comfort knowing Anthony is at peace and walks with his Lord and Saviour.
Anthony, a loving husband and father, was extremely proud of his children and grandchildren. He was born on March 19, 1926, in Ammerstol, Netherlands, and went on to live in Scheveningen and Bergambacht, Netherlands. Anthony served with the Koninklijke Marechaussee after World War II.
In 1951, he married his love, Suzanna, in Vaals, Netherlands, and they immigrated to Canada that same year. They purchased a home in Bowness, he designed modifications for the house and did most of the work himself. Most of his life was spent in that same house, except in the last few years of his life, he enjoyed living at Shalem Court in Calgary. Anton was talented in many aspects of his life and involved in the community. He worked as a craftsman and furniture restoration artisan and helped establish the Calgary Reformed Church for which he continued to act in different capacities through the years. He was Biblical scholar, spending many hours studying the Bible and attending Bible study. He was also a scout leader and an active supporter of the scouting movement. A skilled artist, Anton painted beautiful landscapes of the prairies, foothills and mountains as well as dramatic and picturesque scenes of the Netherlands, and he invented a system for building antique picture frames. He designed and constructed many ships in bottles, about which many asked, "How did you get that ship in that bottle?" He spent his downtime gardening, and all who passed by his property enjoyed and admired the large, beautiful flowerbeds. Anton was a huge fan of Andre Rieu and all classical music alike. A keen follower of Canadian politics, he was quite the armchair critique. He was an excellent public speaker who wove topical humour into his oration. Anton was a man of principle and integrity, a friend to all, accepting without any judgement and always patient. His great sense of humour and sharp wit will surely be missed.
Anthony is survived by his son Hank (Faye) Boer and daughter Thea (Dave) Morris; his grandsons Peter (Vanessa) and Ryan (Crystal); his granddaughters Antonia and Brittany; his brother Wim (Riet); and many nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his wife Suzanna Boer (nee de Groot); his second born, Tony Boer; his parents Hendrik and Pietertje (nee Ouwerkerk); and his brothers Gerrit (Henny) and Marie (Annie).
Funeral Services will be held at the Calgary Community Reformed Church (1638 30 Ave S.W., Calgary, AB), on Friday January, 19, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. A reception will follow at the church.
