Anthony Gentile Obituary

Dr. Anthony J. Gentile, 89, of Dunmore, died Sunday afternoon in Commonwealth Hospice at Regional Hospital of Scranton after an illness. He and his wife, the former Gwendolyn Mullins, would have celebrated 63 years of marriage on June 22.

Born June 6, 1922, in Throop, he was the son of the late Nicholas and Catherine Gentile. He served in the Navy during World War II and was a graduate of the University of Scranton. He attended the University of Mississippi and received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Tennesee. He was board-certified to practice in Pennsylvania and Tennesee. He started his private practice in the Medical Arts Building in Scranton and later moved to the Physician's Building at Moses Taylor Hospital. He specialized in cardiology and internal medicine. Dr. Gentile was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Dunmore and served many years as a Eucharistic minister. He was a member of the American Medical Association and the Lackawanna County Medical Association, where he was honored for more than 50 years of service.

He was a longtime member of the Country Club of Scranton and served on the parent board of the ARC of Northeastern Pennsylvania. He was also a member of Serra International.

He was a devoted husband and father with an unquestionable faith. He was a kind-hearted and generous man who was beloved by family and patients. He had a charming personality combined with a strong moral fiiber.

Also surviving are four daughters, Pamela Gentile, San Francisco; Mary C. Gentile-Bull and husband, Stirling, Waldorf, Md.; Angela Gentile, Dunmore; and Lisa M. Beckage and husband, Thomas, Dunmore; a son, Joseph Gentile and wife, Cindy, Dunmore; a sister, Frances Gentile, Throop; a brother, Fred Gentile and wife, Simone, Mount Cobb; seven grandchildren, Thomas, Tara, Nicole and Jessica Beckage; Matthew and Robert Gentile; and Lilly Jean Bull; and two great-grandchildren, Gia and Gabriella Goff.

He was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Toni Ann Beckage, in 2005.

A Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 11 a.m. in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, 322 Chestnut St., Dunmore. Friends are asked to go directly to the church. Interment, St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow.

Friends may call, Wednesday, 5 to 8 p.m., in the Howard J. Snowdon Funeral Home, 1810 Sanderson Ave., Scranton. Memorial contributions may be made to the ARC of Northeastern Pennsylvania, 115 Meadow Ave., Scranton, PA 18505.

He was a wonderful doctor and very good friend to my mom, Melba Biggar. My mom taught Angela when she was in grade school. She often had her visit us at our house in Old Forge. My sympathy goes out to the family.

My father was a heart patient of the doctor some 30 years ago. He had great trust in him and considered him a friend. I m grateful for all he did for my dad and his compassion which I will never forget.My dad was Joseph Zabielski. All my sympathey goes out to the Gentile family at this time.
