Anthony Matranga Obituary

Published by Houston Chronicle from Feb. 23 to Feb. 24, 2022.
Anthony "Tony"
Joseph Matranga
1933-2022
Anthony "Tony" Joseph Matranga passed peacefully into God's hands on February 11, 2022. He was born April 10, 1933, in Houston, TX to George Matranga & Annie Paratore.
He worked in the helping professions all his life. Always in service to others, Tony was a Catholic priest for 12 years and then went on to work as a Psychotherapist until he retired. Always the loving and devoted husband and father, he showed up with compassion and listened with attention and care. There are never enough words to sum up the whole of a person, but the words of some true friends come close: "What a solid and true friend he was to me. He was always there, always reliable, always available, always up for a good laugh." And "Thank you for being a model of generous availability and compassion". Tony was most alive when helping someone in need. He genuinely cared about the experience of other people. It was said of him that, "he never met a stranger" always "welcoming, expansive, inclusive."
Survived by his loving wife, Joanna Matranga; children David Matranga (Emily Neves), Amy Laday (Trent Laday); siblings Margaret Apffel, Georgia Ann Ethridge-Muñiz (Martin Muñiz Sr.); 4 Grandchildren: Alivia, Trent Anthony, Tristan, & Tyler; & many nieces and nephews.
The family invites you to join us as we celebrate his life on Friday, February 25th at St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church - 11011 Hall Rd, Houston, TX 77089. There will be a rosary at 10:15 am with funeral mass to follow at 11 am.

Dad, I love you. It's been 2 years this past Feb 11th since you transitioned. I know you're with me. I can feel you sometimes. I wish I could see you again in your earthly body. I wish I could hug you. I wish I could get that supportive call from you when you know I'm going through a hard time. Love you always. And always proud to be your son.

He was a very special man. He served as a priest at Sacred Heart in Galveston. There he mentored the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) while I was the president. When Betty and I were married, he performed the ceremony. I remember going to Houston with him and stopping off at his home. Words just don't tell the story well enough of his truly golden qualities. His personality, his caring, everything about him was special.

I was saddened hearing of his passing. He was a wonderful man. He performed our wedding 53 years ago. He remained a true friend through the years. He would come visit us and Jerome would take him fishing. I just found out yesterday about his passing. God bless your family.
Will truly miss this very special man. You are safely home with God & all the heavenly angels.

Fr. Matranga was Chaplin at Dominican where I graduated. I saw him again at the 100th Anniversary of Dominican & meet his wife. They did the music for our mass. May he rest in peace.
