Anthony Moffitt Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 15, 2018.
Tony (Anthony) Moffitt, life-long San Francisco Giants fan, was killed in an automobile accident on September 11, 2018 in Tyler, Texas.

Tony was born January 12, 1961, in Albany, CA, and grew up in Berkeley. He was the 6th of Kathy and Frank Moffitt's 8 children. Tony enjoyed exploring the creeks and gullies around Berkeley, climbing the backyard redwood tree, and building things with the neighborhood kids. He spent his summers at the family cabin overlooking Lake Tahoe where he explored Desolation Wilderness, fished the Carson River, and as a young teen spent a month living with a friend in a cave in the Sierras.

Tony was incredibly well read, enjoyed writing poems and stories and, according to his goddaughter, was the best story teller ever. When he got going with a story there was no stopping him as he animated his stories with big gestures and spit flying. He was generous with his limited possessions and looked out for the underdog. Tony did not tolerate bullies and treated those around him with compassion and respect.

In 1992 Tony accompanied his Mother and Aunt Loreen on a religious pilgrimage to Medjugorje where he was deeply touched by the experiences of the people affected by the war going on there. Soon after getting back home he gave away all his possessions and returned to the former Yugoslavia where he first worked as a hospital photographer documenting shrapnel wounds and then as scout and aid to the non-governmental organizations distributing supplies. He was invited to Castel Gandolfo for a private mass with Pope John Paul II as the result of his humanitarian work. In 1994 while working in Vitez he met, fell in love with, and married Silvana Vidovic.

Tony and Silvana returned to the U.S. with their son, Alen, and settled in Texas where their daughter, Naomi, was born. The family enjoyed camping in the Hill Country of Texas and the Ozarks. Tony loved his grand dogs Pax and Dillon who will miss his silly talk, wrestling time and nature hikes. He was a long-time Dungeons and Dragons player and looked forward to meeting up with his Ground Zero friends and continuing their quests.

Tony is survived by his wife of 24 years, Silvana Vidovic Moffitt, children, Alen and Naomi Moffitt, siblings Mary Elmstrom (Gary), Eileen Frelier (Paul), Kathleen Vinci, Ann Zacharias, Nick Moffitt (Nancy), Madeleine Gerdes (Chris), Margaret Goebel (Kai) and 14 nieces and nephews. His funeral and internment will be in Berkeley, CA. In lieu of flowers you can honor Tony's humanitarian work with a donation to UNICEF.
