Anthony Salem Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 7, 2023.

When I Must Leave You

When I must leave you for a little while, please do not grieve and shed wild tears and hug your sorrow to you through the years, but start out bravely with a gallant smile; and for my sake and in my name live on and do all things the same.  Feed not your loneliness on empty days, but fill each waking hour in useful ways.  Reach out your hand in comfort and in cheer and I in turn will comfort you and hold you near; and never, never be afraid to die, for I am waiting for you in the sky!

I worked with Tony for many years at Sioux Falls VAMC . Tony was a good man , a family man , honest and a man of Faith . He was charitable and loyal to the USD School of Medicine -now Sanford/USD School of Medicine. I always liked him and found him to be trustworthy and principled . May he Rest in Peace .

We were friends for a long time growing up together. I am sorry that he will not be around to talk about old memories

Tony and I worked together for 5 years at the Sioux Falls VA. I was the Internal Medicine Residency Site Director at the VA. Tony was the Residency Director then. I did preoperative evaluations with the residents and ran the outpatient clinic with the residents.
Tony and I would meet just about every day around 5 or so and discuss the happenings of the day, or the residents, or the staff and we had similar political views.

I will bore you with one story.
One time Tony came into my office at the end of the day and said the VA had a program to evaluate Former POWs. They would get an H&P, lab, Xrays, EKGs, or whatever they needed and check their meds.
With a wry grin on my face I asked Tony if he wanted me to do this and he smiled and said Yes.

I saw about 30 or 40 of these guys. Some broke down and cried. I never asked them any personal questions; I just let them talk.
Believe the Japanese POWs had it worse than the German POWs.

I thoroughly enjoyed working with Tony. He was an excellent physician and an excellent administrator and an overall good person.

Oh my gosh, someone just sent me this poem/obit info. I am so sorry for the loss. He was our COS and still came down and had a clinic and saw patients. He cared for our Veterans as if they were his family. He treated his staff the same way. He was funny, caring, compassionate and a work horse. He was great to work with and it was a sad day when he transferred to Las Vegas. RIP Dr. Salem and try to rest in heaven and not be taking care of everyone! Hugs to his family, his work family and his friends.

Dr. Anthony Salem was a former boss, colleague, dear friend and confidant for the past 25 years. He and I practiced together at the VA Medical Center here in Las Vegas, NV. Dr. Salem was honest, ethical, intelligent, collegial, loyal and had a work ethic rivaled by no one. His whole life and 48 year career was dedicated to the care of veterans and he improved the lives of everyone he touched whether you were a patient, colleague or trainee. I will miss him tremendously and he will never be forgotten. Sincere and heartfelt condolences go out to his wife, children, friends and colleagues.
