Leola - The service for Arthur A. Breitag, 77, Leola is 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, December 31, 2003 at St. James Lutheran Church with Pastor Dianne Kiesz officiating. Burial at Green Mound Cemetery, Leola with military honors by the Leola American Legion Post 78. Arthur died Saturday, December 27, 2003 at the Beverly Health Care, Ipswich, S.D. Visitation will be from 1-7 p.m., Tuesday at Spitzer Funeral Home with family present from 5-7. There will also be visitation at the church one hour prior to the service. Arthur Allen Breitag was born on November 16, 1926 at Leola, S.D. to Otto and Mary (Potratz) Breitag. This is the area where he grew up and attended school. He entered the U.S. Army in March 1945 and was honorably discharged in November 1946. On June 16, 1950 he married Virginia Koerner at Aberdeen, S.D. They made their home on a farm S.W. of Leola. In 1981 they moved to Leola and he worked for Modern Woodman until he retired. He also was the Veterans Service Officer for several years. He also worked for Cargill Corn, World Book and numerous other insurance companies. Arthur was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, Leola where he was a past council member. He was a member of Leola American Legion where he was past commander, Alcohol Anonymous since 1964, V.F.W., Eureka and served on the board of directors for the Web. He loved fishing and hunting. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Virginia Breitag, Leola, five sons: Doug Breitag, Alto, N.M.; Wayne (Ann) Breitag, Aberdeen, Brian (Carol) Breitag, Las Cruces, N.M.; Lloyd (Donna) Breitag, Leola; Don (Day) Breitag, Pierre, S.D.; two sister: Della Nusz, Selby; Alma Hoffman, San Jose, Calif., and twelve grandchildren. Arthur is preceded in death by his parents, six brothers: Albert; Rueben; Gerhardt; Gregor; Herbert and Ervin and two sisters: Anna Krein and Clara Guthmiller.
