Civic leader BARBARA KIBLER DILLINGHAM died June 10, 2002 after a brief illness. She was born December 5, 1915, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Kibler of Columbus, Ohio, and a resident of Houston since 1939. She was a graduate of Columbus School for Girls and Wellesley College. She was active in community affairs and served on the boards of DePelchin Faith Home, The Negro Child Center, the Council on Human Relations, Planned Parenthood of Houston and the Harris County War on Poverty Program. She worked closely with Mrs. Frankie Randolph supporting liberal Democratic candidates and was one of the first women to serve on a Harris County Grand Jury. After working briefly in the real estate business, she joined the city administration of Mayor Fred Hofheinz and served as the first Liaison for Cultural Affairs. She was a co-founder of the Houston Parks Board and as its first director she originated the "Give a Park to Houston" campaign for which the Board received a national public relations award. Through her leadership the Houston parks system was increased by 1372 acres with gifts totaling over $12,000,000. For many years she enjoyed her farm in Fayette County and the company of her Arabian horses. In addition to many devoted friends of all ages, she is survived by husband Barry Moore, sister Suzanne Morris and husband S.I. Morris, children Charles Dillingham III and wife Susan Clines, George Dillingham, Elizabeth Dillingham, Randon Dillingham, and step-daughter Clara Moore, grandchildren Sagar Faucheaux, Dianne Dillingham, Jonathan Dillingham, Katie Dillingham, Samantha Dillingham, and former husband Charles Dillingham, numerous nieces and nephews and long-time friend and housekeeper, Charlie (Maxine) Calhoun. Memorial service will be Friday, June 14, 5:15 PM at the First Unitarian Universalist Church, 5200 Fannin, (713)526-5200, with friends and family at home afterward. In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions be made to Planned Parenthood of Houston, 3601 Fannin, 77004; The Parks People, 3015 Richmond, 77098, or the Moores School of Music, University of Houston, 4800 Calhoun, 77004.

Dear Barbara, if I had known that our recent visit in the parking lot of Whole Foods was the last time I would be in the physical presence of your loving, compassionate, committed spirit - I would have hugged you longer and made sure you knew how much I have honored and valued the mentor you have been for me and so many women in Houston fortunate enough to have called you friend.
