Barbara Kohl Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 29, 2011.
Waterford- Barbara Lynn Kohl, 63, of Waterford, died in her home on August 22, 2011. Barbara was born May 8, 1948 in Bayshore, NY, daughter of Robert and Gertrude Kohl Sr. She earned her BS from Buffalo State University, and continued on to attain an MA from Southern Connecticut State University, and an MS from Connecticut College. A 40 year resident of Waterford, she worked for 27 years as a Speech/Language Pathologist for the Waterford Public Schools.

Living as a quadriplegic for 17 years, Barbara served as a beacon of hope by remaining independent and continuing to work. She inspired everyone with her drive to live a normal life, especially her students with disabilities. She challenged society's rules for individuals with disabilities by advocating for disability education and rights, and received one of the country's first Freehand Systems-a surgically implanted electronic hand. A passionate woman with a love for politics and current events, she lived for two things: her daughter and her work.

Ms. Kohl is survived by her daughter Carrie Czerwinski of Waterford, her brother Robert Kohl Jr. of Brightwaters, NY, and two nephews: Robert Kohl III of NY, and Ralph Kohl of VA.

A Memorial Service will be held at All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church in New London on Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at 4:30. Please visit www.fultontherouxnewlondon.com for photos, tributes, flowers, directions and more service information. Because her life was changed by her service dog, Culver, donations may be made in her memory to Canine Companions for Independence.

Barbara was a treasured member of the Cohanzie School staff for many years. We had lots of laughs, some tears, and umpteen memories of our years together. When she came to the 60th birthday party for Helen Hill and myself at Noey Parker's home, her "joke gift" will always be mentioned whenever we gather!
You are in my thoughts and in my prayers.

Dear Carrie and other family members,
I worked with Barbara at Clark Lane Middle School for many years. Through all of the adversity she faced she never wavered. She loved her students and always fought for what was best for them and she will always remain in my heart as an icon of strength to persevere and continue to fight for what we all know is right. She was a beautiful lady, inside and out and I am proud to have known her and worked along side of her. The world is a better place for having had her here. God Bless all of you and know that my thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.

Carrie, my sympathies to you on the loss of your Mom. During my years at WHS, her smile was always a "bright light" for me. Prayers will be offered at First Congregational Church of Watertown this Sunday. Blessings to you and your family.

What a loving tribute, Carrie. Memories of her will leave smiles on the faces of the people who knew her and loved her. Sounds like she touched many lives. She will live on in those people and they will share what they learned from her.
