Barry Dodge Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 24, 2017.
Dodge, Barry Desmond -Passed away at Niagara Ina Grafton Gage on January 22, 2016 surrounded by his loved ones after a two year struggle. Cherished father of Megan McMath ( Owen Culp) and her mother Carol Dodge, loving brother of Debbie (Bill) Heelis, dear uncle to Ryan Heelis, Scott (Stacey) Heelis ,nephew of Bill and Doreen Dodge.
Barry was born March 15, 1946 in Middlesex, England. He emigrated to Canada with his family in 1957, to start a new adventure in his life, settling in St. Catharines. Perhaps this is where his love for adventure and travel began.
Barry was always very active physically and participated in many sports including skiing, sailing, raquetball, running and cycling.
Barry taught for the then Lincoln County Board of Education in the elementary system where his natural talents for coaching sports really shone. He began his teaching career at McArthur, and went on to teach at E.I. McCulley, Pine Grove and, eventually, retiring from teaching in 2001 at Virgil elementary. During the course of his career he coached girls' volleyball, soccer and baseball thriving on the competitive spirit and sportsmanship that he nurtured in his students. He inspired many a team to compete at their best level and along the way developed lasting friendships and mutual admiration and respect for his many students. Barry did a teaching exchange in Brisbane the suburb of Arana Hills, Australia, 1989-1990, with his family, teaching at St. Patrick's Road making lifelong friends in that country.

His extensive travels, after retirement, ultimately took him to the Philippines where he had stayed for the past ten years enjoying the warmer temperatures to the cold Canadian climate. He returned each year to St. Catharines where he enjoyed reconnecting with family and many of his former students, a testament to the endearment of these relationships.

Barry was a kind, gentle and trusting soul who always saw the best in people. He cherished his friendships and his family and always maintained an easygoing disposition.

A very special thank you to Betty, Jim Bradley's office, whose assistance helped bring Barry home to Canada.
A warm and special thank you to all of his compassionate caregivers at Ina Grafton Gage which became his home these last ten months. Here Barry received the loving care which he so badly needed and it was given unconditionally and always with a smile. A Memorial Celebration will be held at St. George's Anglican Church, 85 Church Street, in the reception lounge upstairs from 3-5 p.m. on Saturday, January 28, 2017. Arrangements entrusted to HULSE & ENGLISH FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 75 Church Street (905-684-6346)

It has been very sad to hear of Barry's illness and recent death. My memories of Barry go back to when he and Debbie. his sister, attended Alexander School in St. Catharines after they moved with their family from England. I got to know Barry as a friend and colleague while we worked together at E. I. McCulley School in the early 70's. He was a gifted teacher and dear friend to all who knew him. When I had the opportunty to visit him in August, I was thrilled that he said my name when I walked through his door. His dry wit put smiles on all the lives he touched. Sincere condolences to Megan and his family.

We met Barry at a parent teacher night at Pine Grove. Our daughter Carmen thought the world of him. He was a wonderful teacher and coach. We became friends and Barry raced on our sailboat every Wednesday night and most weekends for 8 years before he went to Australia. Barry loved the whole racing scene and was in his element when in team competition and he just loved being on the water. We have very fond memories of our time with Barry, he was such a fun, kind and lovable man. Rest in the peace you so well deserve Barry.

Very sad to hear of the recent passing of Barry. He spent time in Australia and taught at our local primary school. Our daughter Amanda was one of his students. He will always be remembered here in Australia as Mr Dodge, the Canadian, a kind generous man who went out of way to help his students and everyone he met.

To his family and friends especially Megan we extend our deepest sympathy. God speed Mr Dodge. From the Booker family, Australia

Megan, on behalf of Alicia, Suzanne, Corinne and myself, I would like to express our sincere condolences to you and your family. As you remember, I coached girls softball with Barry for several years. He had a positive calming effect on the players, was always supportive and reinforced their self confidence. Our family has many good memories of our times with Barry. He was a good person and didn't deserve the problems he encountered in the Philipines. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Carol and of course Barry.
Yours sincerely, Ron Grundy
PS: Sorry we can't make it to the funeral as we are in Florida.

I was saddened to hear of Barry's passing and the end of such a vibrant life. Thank you,Megan, for all that you did for him, and for the rest of us. I was hoping to visit Barry this year on our return to Canada having become a friend of Barry's 25 years ago during my wonderful Teacher Exchange year at Virgil Public School.
He was always kind, encouraging and fun. Many young people owe Barry a big favour for the time he donated to them, for the social and sporting skills he taught them and for the tolerance he always displayed. Peace is yours.

We appreciated the effort and attention that Barry gave to our granddaughter when she arrived at Virgil P.S. in 1999 at 10 years of age without English or knowledge of sports, having been adopted in Mexico by our daughter. With his encouragement she became a fine athlete in five different sports. Our condolences to the family. R.I.P. Barry.

Mr.Dodge,
May you now find peace. I was so sad to hear of what you have endured these past years. It feels like yesterday that I ran into you at the Shiny Company in NOTL and were able to catch up in good health. I will never forget you as you were the one who provided the opportunity to bring me together with a very dear friend of mine, from the other side of the world, Amanda Booker; you somehow knew we would become great friends. You wanted to share with us your love of travel and connecting with others, and had our class write to your class in Australia in Gr.6 in hopes of making some penpals. and it was success!... Through that opportunity you presented, I ended up travelling to Australia when I finished high school and seeing a part of the world I probably never would have. There I visited Amanda and her family; what a life experience! She has travelled here...(many more times) and now calls Canada her home.. I can see why you found travel so interesting. I am greatful to you for connecting us:)
You were a wonderful teacher and also a great coach.
Thank you for the lessons you taught me while at Virgil Public School. You will be missed.
Megan, sending you and your family deepest Condolences.

I'm so sorry to hear of Mr. Dodge's passing.

Mr. Dodge as I knew him, was one of my favourite teachers of all time. My childhood memories are full of sports events and games at Virgil Public School, where he would design the newest and most exciting games for us to play. He went over and above to teach us valuable skills and of course, make our education fun. He showed that he cared about his students, and wanted them to have good lives.

He was at my side when I had a major injury during a track and field event, and helped me through the process so professionally. I appreciated his care and keeness to help.

I will miss Mr. Dodge, but he will always live on in the best memories of my childhood, and I know many others would agree.

Peace be with you friends and family of Mr. Dodge.

I am so sorry to hear of Mr Dodges passing. I was a student of his at McArthur school, and he was always helpful to a fellow immigrant. I still have a photo, somewhere, of our McArthur championship football (soccer) team which he was our coach. I am working on Saturday and wont be able to attend, but will be thinking of him...

Sincerely... Alan Brown
