Barry POTTER Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province on May 20, 2016.
POTTER, Barry Stuart
December 31, 1957- May 15, 2016
With great sadness, we announce Barry's passing after a courageous fight with cancer. He will be deeply missed by his loving partner, Kathy Gilstead, his son Brian and daughter Stacy McDonald (Kyle), his first wife and good friend Brenda Beckmann, his parents Stanley and Shirley Potter, aunt Joyce Stuart, brothers Tony and Donald (Jill) Potter, sister Caroline (Derrick) and nephew Ryan (Barbara) Cheyne, stepsons Michael (Raquel) (grandson Tyson) and Steven (Dawna) Gilstead, stepdaughter Taryn Gilstead, mother-in-law Lorraine Hancock and numerous other relatives. Predeceased by his Godfather Bob Nisbet and niece Sarah Cheyne. Barry was devoted to his family and especially loved golfing with Brian and camping and cooking with Stacy. He could be found on a road trip every summer visiting his extended family and especially loved snorkeling with Kathy at Tunnels Beach in Kauai. He was a custodian with Burnaby School District #41 for 26 years, where he was widely loved by staff, students and parents alike. His unique gift of forming connections with the kids at his schools made him one of the schools' most popular staff members. A celebration of Barry's life will take place Monday, May 23 at the Sapperton Pensioners Hall in New Westminster, from 3:00- 6:00. For those who so desire, donations in his memory can be made to the Palliative Care Unit - 2D at Burnaby Hospital, or a charity of your choice.

A very special man has left us. Barry's easy laugh and gentle, caring spirit created close connections with all of us lucky enough to have worked with him. Each and every day that he worked, he went above and beyond the duties expected of him, connecting with all of our students on a personal, meaningful level. He was, and will remain, much loved.
