Barry STANDFIELD Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from Jan. 8 to Jan. 9, 2016.
Barry Miller STANDFIELD 1927-2015 Sadly we announce that Barry passed away suddenly on Dec. 18, 2015 at Lions Gate Hospital. Survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Mavis; children Drew (Nancy), Jane, Jeff (Shira), David (Shannon); grandchildren Trevor, Graeme, and Heather; brother Derek (Carol); cousins Cairine (David) and Mary; many nephews and nieces. Predeceased by his father Reg, mother Dorothy, and cousin Hugh Miller.

Barry often spoke of a fortunate life, spent with close friends and family. A member of the Alpha Delta Pi fraternity, Barry graduated in Commerce from UBC. Barry valued being a member of the Vancouver Club and working with many fine people throughout his life.

He had many happy memories, as a boy at Hood Point, as a junior member of the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club, sailing with his wife and children and owning Standardbred racehorses. Barry had several good friends who met as boys in grade school. Many fall weekends included duck hunting with good friends who remained close for life.

Despite cardiac issues early in life, through determination, dedication to fitness, and a good dose of stubbornness, Barry lived independently until his last few days. He greatly missed his wife and best friend, Mavis, who recently moved into care due to Alzheimer's. Barry was a funny, loving and principled man, and a gentleman to the end. He will be sorely missed.

Flowers gratefully declined in lieu of donations to Alzheimer Society Canada (http://www.alzheimer.ca). A celebration of life will be held on January 23rd at the Teahouse in Stanley Park from 1-3 pm. Please RSVP by emailing [email protected]

I am so sorry to hear the passing of Barry. Barry and Mavis were my neighbours at the Lamplighter until I sold several years ago but we always stayed in touch. It doesn't seem that long ago that I saw him at Safeway which was last Dec. He told me about Mavis and what was happening. I will never forget his smile and stories. Heaven gained a wonderful soul.Lovely couple. My love to Mavis, and my thoughts with your family.

We have only just learned of Barry's passing. We lived in the same complex, almost door to door. We thought the world of this gentleman. He was so kind and gracious.. had so many memorable conversations with both Mavis and Barry.

I loved Uncle Barry and will miss him. Some of my earliest memories are of the Standfield clan at Piers Island, playing guitars and signing as i fell asleep in my little bunk. Uncle Barry was always so kind, loving and patient with me and my brother, David, such as when he taught us how to carve using cottonwood driftwood. Love to Aunt Mavis, Drew, Jane, Jeff, David and your families.

Have many fond memories of having great chats with Barry at the many Standfield dinners and parties. Barry always had a warm smile, was incredibly kind and forever the gentleman. Honoured to have known you. Sincere condolences to the family, Sandra Miles

Ah Barry, you did well. I love your family you made. There were times when I really believed I was part of the gang. A few memories come immediately to mind, Mavis bandaging me up or taking me to emergency. You and your Chum, Plucking feathers with the family. Great memories all because of your wonderful family. I thank you sir.

No one could ask for a better father-in law. He was truly a gentleman.
