Baye Callahan Jasmine Sloane

January 4, 1919

January 7, 2014

Baye Callahan Jasmine Sloane was born Violet Henrietta Callahan on January 4, 1919 in Mina, Nevada to Harry and Violet Callahan. She had two brothers and four sisters, Robert Callahan, Evelyn Hedstrom, Mariellen Capurro, Eileen Callahan, Catherine Ginocchio and Harry Callahan, Jr. Baye was married twice, first to Clarence Jasmine, who died fighting fire, and currently to Jim Sloane, her husband of 45 years. Baye's children include Bonnie Reimers, Judy Adamson, Dannie Jasmine, Pennie Martin, Kathryn Wallek, Mike Pargeon, Cindy Cavallo, Leonora Henry, Charlene Wilson, Richard Sloane and Robin Mix. Baye also had two step sons, Tim and Jim Sloane, as well as 21 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Baye's generous spirit and open home was well known to family and friends. Extending her love to any person in need, Baye was a foster parent to more than 50 children and opened her heart to many more. Her dedication to children carried over to her work as bus driver, first for the Galena School established by the Callahan family. Later she drove the Washoe County School District bus up and down Mount Rose Highway for more than 25 years.

Baye greatfully lived her entire life on the Callahan Ranch that her family founded in 1893. She was a master gardener who maintained a lovely orchard of apples, pears and peaches, as well as a large vegetable and flower garden. She was well known for her preserves and canned fruit and vegetables, which she generously shared with all who visited. Baye grew beautiful gladiolas. She learned their care in her youth working in the gladiola fields that used to be in south Reno.

Baye enjoyed traveling and made many trips to Lake Tahoe and Yosemite with her family. Some of her farther flung trips include adventures to New England, Alaska, England and Aruba.

Baye quietly passed at her home with family nearby on January 7, 2014. She was preceded in death by her parents Harry and Violet, brother Robert, sister Evelyn and son Dannie. A celebration of her life will take place at Mountain View Mortuary 425 Stoker Ave, January 24th 5:30pm - 8:30pm.

Light refreshments will be served after the service. The family invites everyone to bring photos of Baye to be added to a photo collage of her life. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Baye's favorite charities the Arbor Day Foundation at http://www.arborday.org/ - phone 1-888-448-7337 or to Make A Wish Foundation, 1575 Delucchi Ln. Reno, NV 89502 - phone 775-826-8008.

We have been neighbors of Baye for 35 years and she is just an amazing women. Always so friendly and willing to help and give whenever she could. We still have lilacs and flowers growing in our yard that she gave us 30 years ago from her yard. They will always remind us of her.
Jim and family, the sweet memories of the person she was will live through you and comfort you in days ahead.
Love, Craig & Gwen Curtis

I had the pleasure of knowing Baye for many, many years as I grew up on Callhan Ranch Rd. She alway made riding the bus so much fun and especially around Halloween when she would cackle like a witch and scare us all! It was the best time. As my kids ride the bus now, I wish they had someone like Baye driving. I would visit her often as I would go by her house riding my horse home. She would have me over and feed my horse apples and give me fruit as well and ask about my day. She made growing up on Callahan so much fun and I have very fond memories of her. Thank you Baye for everything. My thoughts and prayers are with all of her family.

I first met Baye some 25+ years ago when my son, Douglas, and her son Richard were in school together at the old Brown school. What a marvelous lady. You will be missed and live in our hearts for all time.

Baye raised me and my sister (Sally) when we were just little tikes. She made such an impression on me that I came to love her as my 2nd mother. She took care of 70 plus kids over the years, every one of whom came back to visit her as adults. That says a lot as to the kind of woman she was. I will always cherish her memory, as I know my sister will as well.

What a wonderful lady Baye was! I was lucky enough to work with Baye, driving school bus out of Pleasant Valley, and driving for the Junior Ski Program, spending the day with her and the other drivers, chatting and enjoying the day, while the children skied.
She was so nice to everyone! She will surely be missed by all who knew her.
Rest in Peace Baye.
