I am so sorry for your loss. I was with Bernie in 1981-82 when he was stationed at Scott Air Force Base, IL. I was won over by his wonderful smile and sweet caring demeanor. On Nov. 4, 1982, his deployment to Turkey sent our lives in different directions. I have often wondered how his life continued. I learned of his passing recently and am deeply saddened for his family and friends. After reading all the messages, I now know he stayed true to himself and enjoyed life. Applesauce Bernie!

I am shocked and saddened to read of Bernie's passing. We worked together at TCI in Denver. We played many practical jokes. Loved his Blues brothers car and stories of his experiences as an extra on movie sets. Looked forward to his posts on fb about the weather in TN. Prayers for you Annette.

Bernie, The Man, The Myth, The Legend!! Bernie always had a huge smile and would brighten up any room he went into. It was a pleasure to sing with him or to hang out at Pelini's!! I also will never forget our cross country trek from Nebraska to Tennessee in the motor home!! He will truly be missed.

Bernie was a great addition to the DOD (Department of Defense) shows that we sent to the US bases overseas in the Pacific. The troops loved his wit and entertainment, and Bernie would tell us how much he loved performing for those who serve us. Rest in Peace, Bernie! We hope you have a beautiful stage in Heaven and full houses!

Annette, I am truly sorry for your loss. Its hard to imagine a life without Bernie. Hes been a great friend since we met at a tiny Air Force base in 1982. When I arrived in St Louis after my overseas duty he was there to greet me with a young lady hed convinced to give me a welcome home kiss. He always had a knack for surprises! We got together a few times for some guy things while he finished his term at Scott AFB and I was living in west central Illinois.
We kept in touch over the years. I visited with him in 84 when he lived in Denver. Again in 07 when we visited Mt Rushmore and of course in 08 for the great prairie dog hunt. Jeff and I still laugh fondly thinking of Bern fitting into the back of a Ford Ranger jump seat, bouncing across the fields in four wheel drive, and piling out of it to shoot at critters. Especially his youthful enthusiasm for the hunt and how he simply loved the upgraded scope on his childhood .22 rifle.
I wish we could have gotten together again in the last few years but it wasnt meant to be. We were able to have long conversations several times a year and Ill always cherish those talks. Thats what I remember the most over the last few years, talking and laughing like we just picked it up again. It will be a somber moment when I delete his number. Which, of course, I must do.
Like everyone else, I must let Bernie go. Im thankful he no longer hurts, but am heartbroken at his passing. The world is worse with him not here. Yet somehow he remains doesnt he? Hell be in our hearts as long as we live. Thats not such a bad thing to leave behind after all. May everyone he touched in his short life remember to live, laugh, and love as Bernie did.
Rest in peace my friend. Ill see you on the other side.

The great prairie dog hunter!

In 2008 My brother Jeff and I visited with Bernie and Annette to do a little dog hunting. Bernie did get a few prairie dogs, but we also saved this little black dog on the side of the road in very rural Nebraska. We called it SED (someone else's dog) and he made sure it had food, water and a good collar.

Annette, I am so sorry for your loss. Bernie was a beautiful soul. Always made me laugh. The heavens will now have a true comedian and actor. It was always a pleasure being in the company of Bernie and yourself. I remember going to Peleni's and having a great night of entertainment and laughs. God Bless.

So many memories of Bernie flood my mind. Perhaps one of the funniest ones was when we were bowling on Wednesday evenings (Late 80's). Bernie & Annette's Team was on lanes 3 & 4 and my team was on lane 7 & 8. I had been getting my nails done and had noticed the acrylic on my bowling thumb was slightly loose during warmup. I believe it was during the second game, my thumb popped out of the ball on my first throw. The next thing I hear from Bernie's lane..."Excuse me....we have a nail in lane 3" I look at him and he is grinning ear to ear.... yep... my thumb nail was in his lane! He continued to harrass me the rest of the time bowling and each week would check my nails to ensure they were glued on tight! Bernie always had a smile on his face. He spread sunshine wherever he was. Rest in peace my friend, I know you have them rolling in the aisles in Heaven. Annette - - I am sorry for your loss but know you can some comfort in Bernie now being your personal angel. Hugs! Susan
