Bernard Hetzel Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 13, 2024.
Bernard "Wayne" Hetzel, 82, of Tavares, FL, passed away peacefully at home with loved ones by his side on Thursday, August 8, 2024.

Born on November 23, 1941, at St. Mary's Hospital in West Palm Beach to Bernard and Florence Hetzel, Wayne attended St. Ann Catholic School from kindergarten through 12th grade. In high school, he began working at Hetzel Brothers Construction with his father and brother. After obtaining his contractor license, Wayne established his own construction business, which he successfully operated for nearly 60 years.

Wayne's family became known in the 1950s through the early 80s for the Hetzel Brothers Pageants, which began at Curry Park and later moved to a site on Northlake Blvd. Though the pageants ended in 1983 following the death of Wayne's brother, Bob, the cherished memories continue to warm the hearts of those who experienced the tradition of these inspirational events during the Christmas and Easter seasons.

Known as a "gentle giant," Wayne had a unique ability to make people feel welcome and valued. His kindness and gentlemanly nature were evident in his interactions, always ready to lend a hand and offer a caring ear. Even in his final days, he remained concerned for others, frequently asking his family and caregivers, "How are you doing today?"

Wayne taught his family that the most valuable thing in life was not money or accolades, it was time spent with loved ones. Time to listen, to talk, to enjoy. When God made Wayne, He threw away the mold. He will be missed more than words can explain, as he had an unparalleled gift for making others feel cherished.

He was predeceased by his father, Bernard Hetzel, mother, Florence Hetzel, sister, Bernadine Gleason, and brother, Robert Hetzel. He is survived by his wife Carole; children Margie Wheeler, Steven Hetzel, and Yvette Salerno; grandchildren Gage & Bryson Mooring, Brooke Hetzel, and Dalton & Danielle Salerno; great-grandchildren Ryder, Davis & Rhodes Mooring (first great-granddaughter is due in September); stepson Sean Meehan; and step-grandson Jack Meehan.

A celebration of Wayne's life is planned for September in West Palm Beach, FL. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Cornerstone Hospice in Tavares, FL, an organization whose exceptional caregivers provided comfort during Wayne's final days.
