Bernard Woodridge Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 1, 2025.
Bernard "Bernie" Woodridge, 71, of Somerdale, NJ, passed away peacefully with his family at his side on April 28, 2025, at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Born on October 22, 1953, in Philadelphia, Bernie graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1973, where he proudly played varsity football. His early commitment to teamwork and perseverance would become hallmarks of both his personal and professional life.

Following high school, Bernie pursued a career in healthcare by completing a program to become a certified nursing assistant. He dedicated many years to working as a CNA, where his compassionate nature and gentle demeanor made him a beloved caregiver. His dedication touched the lives of countless patients and colleagues throughout his career.

Bernie found joy in life's simple pleasures and valued meaningful connections. He had a deep appreciation for the outdoors and could often be found camping beneath the stars, riding his bicycle, fishing, or kayaking alongside family and friends. A devoted sports fan, Bernie rarely missed a game on television and was an enthusiastic supporter of the Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies.

Family was central to Bernie's life. He shared many cherished years with his longtime companion Cheryl Stieg. He was a loving father to Chanta Kiner (Bernard), Bernard Turner (Anissa), Bryant Turner, and Chevon Turner. He also embraced his role as a stepfather to Stephen Stieg (Colleen), Daniel Stieg (Monica), Andrea Santos (Andrew), David Stieg (Alison), and Rachael McDowell (Michael). Known affectionately as "PopPop," Bernie took great pride in spending time with his 18 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren-whether playing board games, watching sports together, or cheering them on at their events.

He is also remembered by his siblings William Woodridge and Mary Ann Johnson, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and close friends. He was preceded in death by his mother Ovester Woodridge and siblings James Woodridge, Laverne Woodridge, and Vanessa Jackson.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, May 12, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Chews United Methodist Church, 319 N. Black Horse Pike, Glendora, NJ. Prior to the service, there will be a time of visitation from 9:30 to 11:00 AM.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Chews United Methodist Church.

Bernie will be remembered for his kind heart, warm smile, and unwavering presence in the lives of those who knew him. His legacy lives on through the love he shared and the memories he created with family and friends.

I was stunned to receive news that Bernie had passed away. I only knew him from his few summer trips to Cheryl's summer cottage at Harvey's Lake. He was a gentle giant, very kind and soft spoken. From the first time I met him, I felt as if I knew him for years. Anyone who could call him "friend" is blessed to have known this good man. Bernie will surely be missed. I am so sorry for your loss Cheryl but am certain you and Bernie will be reunited in Heaven some day.

It is heavy hearts that we say goodbye to a very special man. Bernard was the epitome of consistency, he never changed, he was always there for us with kind words, a loving hug, a big smile, and so many other things I will always remember and be thankful for. Through his own actions he taught us how to be kind, loving , and patient and I will live the rest of my life trying to emulate those wonderful characteristics as a father, husband, and friend. Thank you Bernard, we are all gonna miss you!!

There are no words or actions that anyone can do to take away the pain of loss and the emptiness, but there are prayers and we are praying for you. We know your hope is in the Lord and you will see Bernie again rest in that.
