Arrington, Tennessee - Betsey Kelton, formerly of San Luis Obispo, California, and most recently a resident of Arrington Tennessee, passed away October 4, 2021 following a very brief illness. She was 74.
Betsey and husband Frank Kelton, owners of San Luis Ambulance in San Luis Obispo, California enjoyed 22 wonderful years together.
Betsey was born in Hartford, Connecticut and lived much of her adult life in San Luis Obispo, where from very early on she was a prominent local businesswoman. She owned a successful art store and was a leader of the Downtown Business Improvement Association (later the Downtown Association). Betsey's creativity and energy helped create a downtown heralded as one of the best in the country. She later became president of San Luis Ambulance, which she co-ran with her husband.
Betsey was a tireless community volunteer with a special dedication to nonprofit organizations. She was a past president of the American Heart Association, Life Span Services and the San Luis Obispo Women's Shelter Board. She was deeply involved with the Boys and Girls Club of South San Luis Obispo County and was a major organizer of the annual French Hospital Foundation fundraiser. In 2011, Betsey and Frank's deep community service was recognized when they were honored as recipients of the Louis Tedone, M.D. Humanitarian award.
Betsey is survived by her loving husband Frank, son Jason and wife Tonya of Jackson, TN, stepson Justin and wife Jamie of Paso Robles, CA, stepdaughter Mandi of Gilroy, CA, and nine wonderful grandchildren. She also leaves behind the beloved staff members of San Luis Ambulance, who Betsey treated as family and who in turn absolutely adored her.
Betsey was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She had a wonderful sense of humor and a warmth that made anyone she encountered feel comfortable and welcomed. She was a creative thinker, a gifted hostess and a successful businesswoman, but more importantly, a loving, caring, authentic person who will be deeply missed.
A Celebration of Life will be held in San Luis Obispo at a later date.
