BETTIE MUNRO Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 24, 2021.

BETTIE BARRETT MUNRO (Age 89)
Passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 13, 2021, after a month-long battle with COVID-19. A beloved and devoted partner for 62 years to her husband Bruce (deceased 2017), she is survived by her sons, Alan Bruce, Jr. (R. Sarah) and R. Ian; grandchildren Alan Bruce III, Rachel, Shannon (Chris), Alex, and Ryan; great-grandchildren Cali and Isabella; and six nieces and nephews. Born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1931, she was ever the southern belle. She married in 1954 while in college and supported her husband through Emory University medical school. In 1957 they relocated to New Jersey where they raised a family. She re-entered the workforce in 1969 as a real estate salesperson. She and Bruce retired to Virginia about 20 years ago to be close to her boys as well as to move back south. Bettie made friends easily, often regaling them with stories of family and travels, and commanded the room wherever she went. She will be missed by all her relatives and friends. The family held a memorial service graveside at Union Cemetery in Leesburg, Virginia.

Bettie was a spectacular woman. I only knew her for the past three years but in that time I came to realize what a vibrant person she was. When her neighbors and staff at Ashby Ponds were arranging a holiday celebration, Bettie was part of the lead entertainment and told everyone, “I am your Lady Gaga!” Indeed she was! Full of love and life and always ready to chat. When she came to the COVID unit and I was her night RN, I made extra time to sit with her to make sure she was able to eat as much ice cream as she wanted. She even guzzled a can of Coke Cola then left out a burp that a middle school boy would envy. We both laughed over that. She had some of her best times at night and was able to chat with Alan, Ian, and Rachel. She even wanted to put on makeup at 10 PM. She would sing America the Beautiful to me. She was still encouraging others and told me I was good, and kind, and sensitive. She gave me hugs and I hugged her back. She was a beautiful soul, and I was privileged to spend time with her.
