Betty Carrico Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 13, 2015.
Rock, WV-Betty Jean Maxey Carrico, 87, of Rock, WV, passed away on Sunday, April 12, 2015 at Princeton Health Care Center in Princeton, WV with her family members by her side.
Born August 23, 1927 in Cornbeard Ridge, WV she was the daughter of the late Edward and Mary Alice (Quesenberry) Maxey. Betty worked at several different jobs in order to put herself through nursing school at Bluefield WV's St. Luke's Hospital.
After graduating nursing school as a Registered Nurse, she became the supervisor in the newborn nursery at St. Luke's Hospital, from 1948-1951. In June of 1949, she married the love of her life, Robert L. "Bob" Carrico Jr. Shortly thereafter, she and her husband moved to Charleston, WV. There she became the head nurse of the newborn nursery at Charleston Memorial Hospital; now known as Charleston Area Medical Center.
Betty and her family moved to Mullens, WV in 1953 where she was involved with helping her husband build and operate the Mullens Drive in Theater for several years. During that time, she also worked at Wyoming General Hospital in the outpatient department as an emergency room and doctor's office nurse.
In 1966, she became a public health nurse with the Wyoming County Health Department and went on to retire from there after twenty-one years of service. During her time there, she helped many people with family planning and gave thousands of immunizations and vaccinations to eradicate infectious diseases. After retiring she and her husband enjoyed renovating her husband's childhood home in Lake Shawnee, WV; where they have lived since 1987.
Betty had many other passions that included: sewing, gardening, going to flea markets, attending auctions and estate sales; always searching for unique antiques that she thoroughly enjoyed restoring and displaying in her home. She also loved spending as much time as possible with her adored family and attending church at the Ashworth Memorial United Methodist Church of Matoaka.
In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by: four brothers; David, Dewey, W.C (Bunk), and I. Edward Maxey; three sisters, Opal Snead, Ima Mae Maxey, and I. Pauline Maxey.
She will be sadly missed by her loving husband of 65 years, Robert L. "Bob" Carrico Jr.; two sons, Robert L. Carrico III and wife, Dianna of Shelby Township, MI and Timothy Edward Carrico and wife, Karen of Beckley, WV; one daughter, Alicia Carrico Price and husband, Randy (Scooter) of Princeton, WV; two grandsons, Robbie and Timmy Carrico; granddaughter, Samara Allison Carrico McGahey and husband, Bob; granddaughter, Ashleigh Aliceson Price; five great-grandchildren, Shai, Macklin, Eden, Lucy and Irelyn McGahey; one sister-in-law, Nancy Leigh Carrico Henderson of Winchester, VA; and many beloved friends.
Visitation with the family will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 16, 2015 at Roselawn Funeral Home Chapel in Princeton, WV. Funeral services will take place at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 17, 2015 at Roselawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Princeton, WV where she will be laid to rest. Pastor David Damewood officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Princeton Health Care Center, 315 Courthouse Road, Princeton, WV 24740; and designate contributions to the nurses training program in her honor.

Your mom was such a caring, loving person. She came to our Job Training class at Mullens High School (in the old Wikel house) and taught the girls how to bathe a baby and take care of children and babies. That was a very necessary skill for all of us, and I thank her for that. Every day living beside your family in Mullens was a joy, always exciting and interesting. May the love of friends and family comfort you at this time. The Wikels

My name is Donna Price-Boblett and I worked for Betty and Doreen Lyons for two years at the Wyoming County Health Department in Pineville. Both Betty and Doreen were two of the most amazing ladies. I cherish memories of them. Betty was a great person and I loved my time with her. She was one of the most kind and sharing people I ever had the pleasure of meeting. I loved her. Donna

Betty always had a smile on her face! Betty and Mother (Doreen Lyons) worked well together at the Health Dept. Not many people didn't know Betty if they lived in Wyoming County! So many wonderful memories of this dear lady we will always have. My heart felt condolences for your loss. God bless you all! My love.
