Betty Gilliland Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 7 to Apr. 8, 2023.
Betty Lorraine Gilliland, age 90, passed away peacefully in her home on March 9, 2023. Her husband Sam Gilliland, a decorated Korean War Veteran, preceded her in death. Betty is survived by her four children: Rebecca Ann, Mark, Michael, and Bobbette in addition to several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Betty's legacy extends far beyond her immediate family. Born in 1933, she was the beloved daughter of Anna Zueck and Louis Anesi, who were descendants of pioneer homesteaders in San Juan County, Colorado. Betty spent her youth in both Silverton and Durango surrounded by a close-knit community of family and friends. Her passion for nursing, following in the footsteps of her trailblazing cousin Albena, began at an early age and became a lifelong devotion. After marrying her husband Sam, the couple relocated to Tucson where Betty worked as a nurse for over 35 years. During her career she also taught Nursing at the University of Arizona and Pima College, sharing her expertise and inspiring countless students. Betty was a great friend and devoted mother; she will be cherished for her radiant spirit and unwavering dedication to her family and community. Private services to be held to honor and celebrate Betty's life.

Mom would be very proud that Mike and Mark and Ann encouraged me me to purchase her home surrounded by lush desert gardens in an exquisite historic neighborhood!Mom encouraged me to retire so I could fulfill my life through my art. She made that a possibility for me; here, in her former home, I have a workshop/ art studio!!
I am so grateful.
Thank you mother.
Thank you God

During our preteen years Bett y sometimes would come down from Silverton to Durango. She would stay at our house and we would sleep in one bed. So, we had a lot of fun sharing experiences and talking all night.
After she graduated she came down to Durango where my mother got her a job as a telephone operator. During those years she lived with us so we had a chance to become very close.

My cousins Betty, Tom Burchfield, my sister Barbara and myself were practically raised together. Between our grandparents and my parents we had a great childhood. As the youngest I always felt like I had older siblings and love them as such. Herm

Many years ago when Betty was visiting family members in Denver, CO area. our elder daughter about two years became quite ill with fever. Nurse Betty, my husband's first cousin, put her in a tepid bath and kept putting a wet cloths on her face. The child was screaming and scowling at Betty. For years to come Betty would say; "I surly hope Alyson doesn't recall that experience". We parents of course most grateful. Only one of so many fine memories. Blessings family: Linnea Zueck
