Betty J. Swart

Betty Jane (Kies) Swart, age 97, of Platteville, WI, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 29, 2025. She was born at her paternal grandparents' home in Platteville on January 18, 1928, the daughter of John W. and Lucille (Tracy) Kies. Betty attended various elementary schools and Potosi High School before graduating from Platteville High School in 1945. Growing up, she was involved in 4-H; showing steers with her brother, Elton, and becoming proficient with a sewing machine. Betty furthered her education with a certificate in Education from the Platteville State Teachers College, now the University of Wisconsin - Platteville, and went on to teach fourth grade in Cuba City. While in college, Betty met Robert A. Swart at a Platteville Armory dance, and they married on December 27, 1948. Together, they raised a family of six children, farmed for many years and regularly danced to all the big bands in the area. Betty was a faithful member of the Whig Community Church and active in its ladies' group.

Betty is survived by her children: Kristie (Dennis) Popp, Gregory (Julie) Swart, Susan (Jeff) Hillary, and Jeffrey Swart; 9 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Lucille Kies; special cousin, Joyce Ebert; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, on May 17, 2011; two sons, Marc and Steven Swart; a grandson, Sean Hillary; her brother, Elton Kies; sister, Ila (Wayne) Sampson; and brothers-in-law: William (Florence) Swart and Richard (Geraldine) Swart.

A funeral service with luncheon will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 10, 2025 at Whig Community Church, rural Platteville, WI. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Platteville. Visitation will be Saturday, May 10, 2025 from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church. In lieu of plants, flowers and other gifts, memorials may be given in Betty's memory to Whig Community Church, the MercyOne Dubuque Foundation, or another charity of choice. Popp Funeral and Cremation Services in Viroqua, WI, is entrusted with her services.
