Bill W. Carthel, 78, of Friona, died Thursday, Aug. 26, 2004, in Amarillo.
He was born on July 7, 1926, in Floyd County, Texas, to Wayne and Ruth Golden Carthel.
He was a Parmer County resident since 1957, coming from Dimmitt, Texas. He was a farmer/rancher and was a member of the 10th Street Church of Christ in Friona. He served 30 years as a director of the Plainview Production Credit Association Board and 24 years on the Friona Farmers Co-op Gin Board. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the Army's 187th Glider Infantry regiment in the Pacific Theatre. He married Ann McCabe on June 1, 1948, in Dawn, Texas.
He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Emma.
Survivors include his wife; four sons, Danny Carthel (and wife, Harletta) of Gruver, Texas, Donny Carthel (Cindy) of Amarillo, Davy Carthel (Kathy) and Doug Carthel (Traci), all of Friona; two brothers, Bob Carthel of Llano, Texas and Jim Carthel of San Isabel, Colo.; four sisters, Margie McLain of Lakin, Kan., Dorothy Chappell of Meeker, Colo., Shirley Fields of Arlington, Texas, Patsy McCollum of Amarillo and Beth Gearn of Hereford; 10 grandchildren, Justin, KiKi, Kade, Colby, Courtney, Andy, Molly, Hannah, Caitlin and Cailee; and two great-grandchildren, Kyler and Kylie.
David Minson officiated the services.
Burial was at Friona Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the New Mexico Christian Children's Home in Portales.
Arrangements were by Blackwell Funeral Home of Friona.
