Brenda Sutherland Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jun. 7 to Jun. 9, 2018.
Brenda Joy Sutherland

(AKA Queen of Beacon Hill North)

May 18, 1942 - June 3, 2018

If you are reading this then I have successfully transitioned to the next portion of my journey. I have led a very fulfilling life and am grateful for many accomplishments. I started out in Winnipeg, Manitoba being the eldest child of Samuel and Anne Payne. Four more children followed-Bonnie (Ed-deceased), Carol (Robert), Bryan (Pat), and James (deceased 2016). My greatest goal in life was to ensure that my two daughters, Tracey (Mark) and Robyn (Paul) would become strong independent women. They have done that in spades and it makes me so proud to have been their mother. One of the best names I had was "Grandma". My Ottawa Grandchildren were Brodie and Caleigh and my Hamilton Grandchildren were Maxwell and Quinn. I cannot express adequately the joy they brought to my life. One regret is I will not be able to join in their special moments, however, keep an eye out for Cardinals, yup that will remind them of me.

I was also happy to have been part of The Norman Paterson School of International Affairs at Carleton University. I spent thirty plus years assisting students and faculty in their day to day routines. There were many wonderful students many of whom I kept in touch with over the years, Yay social media. I may be gone but the stories will live on.

After retiring from Carleton, life became even busier. I was able to give more time to Orleans United Church and became very involved in volunteering on various committees. I met so many wonderful people who became very important in my life. Thank you for all the support you gave to me particularly in the last part of my journey.

Another rewarding part of my life was the exercise class where I was a member. Rosario Holmes lead the Lung Maintenance program at the Ottawa Lung Association. The members of the group were unbelievable, very supportive, sharing their stories and all experiencing various issues with their lungs. I was grateful for their friendship.

I enjoyed so many things in my life. Cooking, baking, gardening (loved my pond), shopping, spending time in B.C. with James and my best baby sister Carol (Bob) (three musketeers), we sure had great times. I was blessed to have had so many special friends Janet, Janice, Judy, Beverley, Cheryl, Bonnie and Verna to name a few.

I would be remiss if I did not thank all the dedicated people at the Ottawa General Cancer Centre. Dr. MacRae, Dr. Laurie, Dr.Goindi, nurses and I must not forget Earl. He was always there with a great big hug. I gave it my best shot but it was not to be.

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life and reception will be held at Orleans United Church, 1111 Orleans Blvd on June 11 at 1:00 p.m.

Donations to www.lungcancercanada.ca would be greatly appreciated.

Well Brenda, since you spoke directly to us in your notice I will speak directly to you in this message. Firstly, let me say I feel blessed to have shared a short season of my life with you as you were one of the most authentic people I have ever known. I am thankful we got to speak to each other, even just for a few moments, a couple of days before you transitioned. Your smile, laughter and enthusiasm for life and people was still in abundance. I know your friends, family and dear grandchildren will miss you terribly. However, they will remember you with so much love always, especially when they see or hear a cardinal, just as I remember Gary every time I hear a black capped chickadee chirping out its insistent song. Thank you for your friendship and caring during Gary's illness and passing and thank you for always remembering the ALS walks. As you wished, I will donate to the lung cancer society in your memory. Happy trails dear one.

Dear Tracy, Robyn and families
Sending our sincere sympathies in the loss of your Mom and Grandma. I have fond memories of sharing experiences with our cousins the Payne family. Brenda was always full of fun. I know she and Bill were best buddies. As for me, Carol and I were best buddies. There was never a dull moment when the cousins got together. Brenda showed extraordinary bravery as she experienced her journey with cancer. You will miss her greatly but her legacy will live on with you. Hugs and kisses. Lynda and Ken

My deepest sympathies to Brenda's family, Robyn and Trace. I was very sad to hear of her passing, even though it was expected it was non the less very sad. I knew her for many years. I met her as a young naive kid and she welcomed me in to her home with open arms. I will remember her as a strong, independent woman. She taught me a lot and helped mold me into the man I am today. Her cooking was truly amazing. Her Nanaimo bars are still to this day the best I ever had. She will be missed. I am very fortunate to have spent a few afternoons with her over the last few months chatting and catching up. So brave right to the end.
Thanks for dinner Mrs S. Oh your welcome Grosser.
Bye Mrs S.

Very sorry to hear the news. Brenda was the first person I met when I arrived to NPSIA back in 1997 as an international student from Mexico. She was very welcoming and funny! During my two years at NPSIA, she always had a helping hand for me and for all students in general. I will always keep great memories from you, Brenda. My condolences to the family.

I was Brenda's next door neighbour for almost 20 years. She watched my family grow and gave me wonderful advice across the fence for all of those years. Sometimes it was about gardening, sometimes it was about kids, sometimes it was about being a woman. She always spoke to me as a peer and celebrated my strengths. She made me laugh and reflect on life. I admired her strength and candor. I was blessed to have known her for all of those years. My condolences to Tracey, Mark, Robyn and the kids.

I was one of those international students who had the pleasure of knowing Brenda in her professional capacity - her ability to know all our names astounded me and showed the kind caring person she was. To those of you who knew her better than I did, you were lucky, but I am sure it hurts (hurt is the price of love as they say) She was a special person - and I will think of her when I see cardinals now too.

As a colleague of Brenda's at Carleton, she was always professional with a softer fun loving side. She was a get it done' person, and did exactly that. She spoke of her daughter's with great pride and shared some parenting and household DIY tips with me, as a single parent. Since leaving Carleton I lost touch with her but imagined her carrying on her amazing gifts in the next stage of her life. We have all lost in her passing. My condolences to her family, both personal and professional.

My deepest sympathy on the loss of Brenda. This is very sad news. I worked with Brenda at Carleton and I know how hard she worked in her department until the day she retired.

Very sad to read of the passing of Brenda. I first met her while working at the front desk at the OAC. Her advice and perhaps a "little influence" helped me secure a spot in the Masters Program at NPSIA. While attending the program Brenda became our "mother" and advocate, enabling us to successfully navigate academia and bureaucracy. As a teacher, I enjoyed popping in when taking my senior students to the CU library and catching up on NPSIA news and updates on her two girls who had made her so proud. I will take your advice Brenda and think of you whenever the cardinals visit my backyard!
