Brian GERBRANDT Obituary

Published by Edmonton Journal from Jan. 31 to Feb. 1, 2012.
GERBRANDT, Brian D, P.Eng
It is with profound sadness and heavy
hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Brian Gerbrandt on January 18, 2012 at the age of 50 years.
He was the loving and devoted husband
of Susan (nee Connell); the youngest son of Ida and Richard Gerbrandt; dear brother to Wayne (Brenda) and Les; and wonderful
uncle to Laurena, Anika, Kaylan, McKenzie, Shanelle and Brandon; loving nephew and cousin.
Brian grew up in Cranbrook and moved
to Edmonton to attend the University of Alberta, where he received his degree in
Civil Engineering.
Brian's love of the outdoors, nature and physical activity was only surpassed by the love and devotion he had for Susan. His patience and positive outlook on life was based on the mutual love and respect they shared as a couple. Together, they enjoyed many great rides cycling abroad, and especially with their friends in the Edmonton Bicycle and Touring Club, as well as swimming, circuit training and running
with his "triathlon family" at Hardisty
Leisure Centre and Bonnie Doon. He loved
the challenge of preparing for and participating in triathlons.
A dedicated engineer, Brian shared his interest in cranes and engineering with his colleagues, friends and family alike, leaving many lasting impressions on all those he came into contact with. Brian was a loyal friend, and a gentle soul with a green thumb. His family will recall fondly his amazing fresh vegetables and corny jokes shared at summer barbecues and family outings.
We will miss Brian, he was larger than life, a triathlete and highly respected professional engineer, acknowledged for his experience in crane rigging. We feel privileged to have known Brian and to have been part of his life. While we are deeply saddened, Brian will continue to inspire us to carry on his legacy.
Please join us in a Celebration of Brian's Life on Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. at Hainstock's Funeral Home, 9810 - 34 Avenue, Edmonton. The "Liturgy of the Word" Funeral Service will be celebrated on Thursday, February 2, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Michael's Resurrection Parish, 10555 - 50A Street, Edmonton. Cremation to follow. In lieu of floral tributes, memorial donations in memory of Brian may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Alberta or The Lung Association - Alberta or Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada.

Susan I was in shock when I heard of Brian's sudden passing. We would always try to encourage each other on our off days at Sterling. I will never forget Brian's tenderness and kindness to me when Lee passed away and his concern for me. Please know that I understand what you are going through and I pray that God would comfort you at this time and as you continue on your new journey without Brian that you would find joy for the course ahead and that your life would continue to have great fulfillment. He was a great guy married to a wonderful woman - that hasn't changed. I will remember you in my prayers as I know the road ahead will be challenging but not insurmountable! Love and prayers

Sue ~ how shocking, dreadful, shattering a situation to lose Brian so suddenly.

I'm so sad for you - he was such a good, sweet fellow and good, sweet
fellows are hard to find.

When last you visited, I enjoyed seeing you interact and seeing that the great love you had for each other had grown even more.

I haven't a single useful thing to say that could even begin to comfort you but I am happy for you that you found each other and had such a wonderful life together.

My condolences, as well, to all the friends and family of you both who are also feeling this loss deeply.

Dear Susan and family, our sincere condolences for your loss. Brian was a great mentor for me at Sterling Crane for the 6+ years that I worked there. I give him all the credit for teaching me everything I know about the crane industry. He was a boss, a co-worker and a good friend to me. May you find comfort that he had a huge impact and left a lasting impression on all of us.

Dear Susan;
On behalf of all Sterling staff here in Fort McMurray, our thoughts are with you and family on this very sad occasion.I too am still in shock, but I'll draw on the positive side of how Brian enriched my life, working with him over the last 8 years and laugh out loud when I recall our Monday morning conversations and he would say:, "Gerard, stop, stop, I have my Laugh Quota in for the whole week". We always laughed so hardy, in between get work done and he knew my favourite response would be, when he asked me how things are going, - "Just another Day in Paradise." I believe you were with him, in BC, most likely cycling when he spotted a sign that said, welcome to hell and as he looked across the road, there was another sign that said Paradise. He told me this; "Gerard, I finally know your secret, I found Paradise on the weekend" and we laughed so so hard. These are the memories that I want to share with you and as the picture shows Brian's smiling face, that is how I will always remember him.May you feel all the love and energy that we all hold for Brian to help guide you through this most difficult time.

To Susan and the rest of your family

We are deeply shocked and saddened to hear this news! We are stilling finding it difficult to believe!

Some people come into our lives
and quietly stay.
Others stay for a while,
leaving footprints in our hearts
and we are never the same.

Take care and our thoughts will be with you.

I had the pleasure of working with Brian for a number of years at Sterling and I'm also thankful for the assistance and advise he passed on in later years. His dry whit and humour always made both of us laugh.

I remember several years ago having the pleasure of golfing with him in Maui. Between the two of us duffing shots, whe we spent as much time laughing as we did golfing.

It was a pleasure to have known Brian. He was a gentleman, scholar and a friend.
