I had the good fortune of going to university plays with Bruce and his wife Rosemary, of playing tennis with him regularly, and of meeting his sons Percy and Adam. I took three classes with him, two as independent studies, and learned considerably. He let me use his outer office instead of sharing a large office with other graduate assistance. Years later, Percy visited my Writing for Stage & Screen classes twice to share his experience in New York and Hollywood. I got to pick guitars once with Adam, a regular on Prairie Home Companion, and have stayed in touch occasionally with him. I frequently recall meeting Bruce in Niagara on the Lake in Canada for the George Bernard Shaw festival, where we attended three plays.

Bruce Granger was my mentor in graduate school. He was a renaissance man, a true gentleman, a scholar, a superb professor, and a great friend. The cap and gown I wear at my university's commencement ceremonies was given to me by Bruce - a real legacy.
