BRUCE HORNE Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 25, 2014.
HORNE, BRUCE ESTES, PhD - 61, died Thursday evening, May 22, 2014, at his home in Knoxville, of a heart attack. Born in Bristol, Tennessee, in 1953, Bruce lived there until he moved to Knoxville in 2003. Bruce graduated from Bristol High School in 1969, Tusculum College 1988, Norwich University in Vermont where he earned his masters degree, and in 1997 from Walden University where he earned his PhD. He also attended Graham Bible College. His passions were first to his loyal dog, Royal (his boy), that of riding his Triumph Café Racer bike, and he did ride it fast, and finishing his restoration of his 1964 Galaxy 500 hardtop automobile. He described himself as an avid patriot, a Tennessean, and an NRA member. He started a new congregation, Church of God Knoxville Tennessee, in January where he poured his heart and soul into. He was a presenter on The World Tomorrow broadcast, preaching the second coming of Jesus Christ and Bible Prophecy, and can still be seen on Sundays and Wednesdays. He enjoyed his teaching career, which turned from the brick and mortar institutions of which he taught at several colleges to teaching online out of his home. He had done that for the past 11 years. His true passion was to preach the love of Jesus and the Kingdom to come in his second coming. Bruce was a gifted musician who played the trumpet, piano, autoharp, and about anything else he wanted to. Bruce was preceded in death by his parents; mother, Claire Evelyn Horne; and his father Emory Estes Horne; his maternal grandparents, Herschel Clay Boyd and Kate Merriman Boyd, both of Waynesboro; and two uncles, Eugene Clay Boyd and James Peyton Boyd Sr., both of Bristol. Survivors include Bruce's wife, Janet Grant Horne of Knoxville; his step daughter, Lori Ann Willson of Knoxville; his step granddaughter, Julie Ann Craft, who called him Pops, of Knoxville; his uncle, Robert Herschel Boyd of Duncanville, Texas; great aunt, Virginia (Tootsie) Fielder Hobbs of Waynesville, Tennessee; cousins, Mary Inman Boyd Geiger and her husband, Dr. Jim Geiger, of Bristol, James Peyton Boyd Jr. of Abingdon, Virginia, cousins, Cynthia Fielder Diamond of Shawnee, Kansas; Virginia Dodge Fielder of Boone, North Carolina, David Harris Diamond of Merriman, Kansas. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 27, at Highland Memorial Funeral Home, 5315 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN 37919, with funeral services to follow. Joe Smith, Bob Howard, David Diamond, Virginia Dodge Fielder, honorary speakers and Reinhard Klett officiating. Family and friends will gather at the Boyd/Horne family plot at Historic East Hill Cemetery in Bristol, Tennessee-Virginia, for graveside service at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 28. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Church of God Knoxville Tennessee, 448 N. Cedar Bluff Road, Suite 207, Knoxville, TN 37923. Highland Memorial Funeral Home (865) 588-0567

Janet and Lori, I am so deeply sorry for your loss and my heart and prayers are with you both. Please contact me: I would love to talk, as Bruce and I had just been talking over the phone, and he indicated that we should all meet up later this year when I was planning to come visit.

I am so saddened to hear of Bruce's passing, as I loved him so deeply. Bruce was family to me, the brother that I never had. We used to sit on the wall between our houses together and have long talks about life, philosophy, and everything in between (he was my next-door neighbor growing up, and his mother was my piano teacher), and I will cherish those memories forever, as they were formative moments in my life. I just spoke with Bruce on the phone on Monday for over an hour, and he told me how proud he was of me and how proud his mother would be (and I told him how proud I am of him and how blessed I have been to have him in my life). We talked at length about our houses in Bristol, and he said that someday he wanted us both to go back to that wall and sit and talk: I promised him I would return to that wall, and now I plan to go back there and leave something in honor of this kind, gentle, and thoughtful man. I cannot express in words how he touched my life, and encouraged me to pursue not only a life of learning, but also a spiritual life devoted to God. I am so thankful that I had this chance to hear his voice one last time and for us to share our hearts with each other. Bruce, my brother, I love you and am so thankful that God brought us into each other's lives. I will always think of you as I continue on in this life. I miss you brother.

I am in complete shock and deeply grieved. Bruce and I spoke by phone on May 22! How can this be? He was my next door neighbor on Pennsylvania Avenue for over 20 years and a dear friend. His mother and grandmother were also precious to me. May the Lord comfort all of us who knew and loved Bruce.

Thoughts and prayers to you, Janet, and family in the sudden loss of Bruce. He will be greatly missed by all of us "Vikings". I especially enjoyed what he shared with us on FaceBook. His mother, Claire, was one of my favorite teachers. Great loss. Much love to you all!

I just spoke to Bruce via email on Facebook two weeks ago about riding his Kawasaki H2 by my house (fast) on Cedar Valley rd. - a 2 mile straightaway! I'll always remember that sound and thinking - there goes Bruce! My condolences to his family.
