RAYMOND
BRUCE ALLEN, M.D.
After 92 years of a life well lived, Dr. Bruce Raymond passed away on May 15, 2017. He leaves a rich legacy with many accomplishments both professional and personal. Dr. Raymond was a skilled thoracic and cardiovascular surgeon in the United States Army and in private practice after retiring from the Army as a full Colonel. In later years he enjoyed a successful career as a medical director for multiple nationally-known insurance companies. Dr. Raymond was born in Aberdeen, South Dakota on December 8, 1924, to Pearl Blackstone Raymond and Samuel Raymond. He grew up in Rapid City where his father owned a Chrysler dealership. Dr. Raymond received his B.S. in Medicine from the University of South Dakota and his M.D. from Washington University in St. Louis, MO. In November of 1949, Dr. Raymond joined the Army, which sent him to several hospitals around the world over the next two decades. His first overseas postings as an Army physician were to Heidelberg, Germany and Versailles, France. He then returned to the States and completed residencies in General Surgery and Thoracic Surgery at Walter Reed General Hospital in Washington D.C. In addition to being on the team that treated President Dwight Eisenhower, Dr. Raymond was among the early wave of surgeons to use the heart and lung machine and to perform open heart surgeries on newborns. While at Walter Reed, Dr. Raymond also had the good fortune to perform surgeries along with Pittsburgh thoracic surgeon Dr. George Magovern. From D.C., Dr. Raymond moved to Letterman General Hospital in San Francisco, CA, where he was Chief of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and an active researcher in surgical techniques for various heart maladies. This posting was followed by three yyears in Germany, where he was Chief, Department of Surgery at the Landstuhl Army Medical Center, and then relocation to Fitzsimons General Hospital in Denver, Colorado, to serve as Chief of both the Department of Surgery and the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery. His final posting was as Surgical Consultant for the Vietnam Theater. He retired from the Army Medical Corps in April 1972, with a Legion of Merit. In 1974, Dr. Raymond joined Rhode Island Cardiothoracic and Vascular Associates, which treated thousands of patients in Providence and Warwick, RI. After his wife, Jane Molnar Raymond, graduated from Brown University Medical School, they relocated to Chicago, IL for Dr. Jane Raymond's residency. In Chicago, Dr. Bruce Raymond started his third career as Medical Director for HealthCare COMPARE. The family then moved to Pittsburgh where Dr. Raymond held senior Medical Director positions for insurance companies including The Health Plan and others. As proud as he was of his professional life, he found even more satisfaction in raising seven children, four from his first 22-year marriage to Virginia Stratmann Raymond Lyda and three with his current wife of 47 years, oncologist Jane Molnar Raymond, M.D. As his professional life allowed, he became more involved in his children's endeavors, often participating in their activities and always encouraging them in their scholastic and professional development. Dr. Raymond was also an active member of the Presbyterian Church, serving as an Elder. And he was a lifelong supporter of the Boy Scouts of America, having earned the rank of Eagle Scout as a teen, raising sons who achieved Eagle Scout rank, and serving for years as Chairman of the Advancement Committee for the Greater Pittsburgh Council. In addition to his wife, Dr. Raymond will be missed by his children and their families, Judy Hultquist of Ossining, NY, Jacky Norris and her husband Abbott of Missoula, MT, Bruce Raymond, Jr. and his wife Michelle of Aurora, CO, Brian Raymond of Aurora, CO, Douglas Raymond and his wife Ananda Martin of Seattle, WA, Andrew Raymond and his wife Ashley of Sewickley, PA and Colin Raymond and his wife Luciane of Sewickley.
