Bryan Anthony Hoffman was born on September 20, 1939 in Richmond Heights, MO to Calvin and Hilda Rose Hoffman (both deceased). When he was 5 years old they moved to Portland, OR. He was in the first graduating class at David Douglas High School in 1957, starting as a sophomore. He graduated in 1963 from Portland State College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics with a minor in Engineering. He worked on survey crews for Bonneville Power Administration during summers while attending college. After graduation he was hired by Bonneville Power Administration as a General Engineer. He retired from Bonneville after 35 years of service. Bryan also spent 6 years in the Oregon National Guard.
Amateur radio was his long time passion. His interest began in 1956 when he helped start the David Douglas High School “Ham” radio club. He was a federally licensed Amateur Radio Operator for 58 years. Bryan was an active member of the Hoodview Amateur Radio Club and the Willamette Valley DX Club. He also enjoyed league bowling for many years and was an avid cribbage player. Upon retiring, he and his wife Patricia purchased a Winnebago motorhome and traveling became their next adventure in life. They joined two Winnebago groups, the Rose City Winnie’Gonians and also became active in the state organization, the Oregon Trail Winnies and Itascas. They enjoyed the companionship and fun with these groups for 14 years. Bryan was also a charter member of the Gateway Elks Lodge #2411.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years; Patricia, daughter Colleen of Eagle River, AK, his son Robert of Vancouver, WA, and nephew Adam Schilling of Seattle, WA. His son Michael predeceased him on March 10, 2014. Bryan is also survived by his Brother-in-law Wally Green and his wife Anna Marie, two nieces, Heather Kelner and Haley Maseda, and two great-nephews, Tony Diaz-Green and Maximillian Maseda.
