ABINGDON – Byrum Ray "B.R." Berry, 77, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2005, at his home.
Born in Chilhowie on Nov. 19, 1927, he was the son of the late Fount William and Margaret Alice Berry. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 46 years, Elizabeth "Betty" Sneller Berry; his son, David William Berry; his granddaughter, Johnia Hope Berry; his sisters, Opal Berry Bishop and Patsy Berry Williams; and his brothers, Stewart Davis Berry, Kelly Wilson Berry and Fount William Berry Jr. Mr. Berry was an active member of the Mountain View United Methodist Church. He was a graduate of Chilhowie High School and attended Roanoke Business College. He founded Berry Home Centers and was a U.S. Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Heusley Berry; a daughter, Cathy Berry McDonald, and son-in-law, Jay McDonald, Covington, Ga.; a son, Michael Ray Berry, and daughter-in-law, Joan Trivett Berry, Lawrenceville, Ga.; six stepdaughters, Trinka Testerman, Jett Heusley, Lise Hall, Susie Ingle, Becky Wallnear and Alice Dean; two granddaughters, Ashley Elizabeth Cobble and Kimberly Alice Cobble, both of Knoxville, Tenn.; one grandson, Matthew Fount Berry, Kingston, Tenn.; five great-granddaughters; five stepgranddaughters; five stepgrandsons; one stepgreat-grandson; two stepgreat-granddaughters; and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Kelly Berry, Chilhowie; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Flowers will be appreciated or memorials may be made to Mountain View United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 1722, Chilhowie, VA 24319; or a charity of your choice.
A worship service thanking God and celebrating the life of Byrum Ray Berry will be held on Friday, Feb. 18, 2005, at Mountain View United Methodist Church, Chilhowie, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. John Graham officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at any time at Mr. Berry's home in Abingdon and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 17, 2005, at the Mountain View United Methodist Church, Exit 35, from Interstate 81, south on 762, turn right on 607, left on 649 and left on 660. Pallbearers will be Tom Bishop, Billy Boswell, Tommy Bishop, Tim Burke, Kelly Burke and Mike Hall. Honorary pallbearers will be employees of Berry Enterprises.
