My Condolences. I just found out. I enjoyed working with Coach in basketball camps and at Dickinson. He always made me laugh and had a positive outlook on life. He talked about his love for his family. I felt blessed to be introduced to the family. I am out of coaching and on the road most of the time. You all are in my prayers because the process is ongoing. Be strong. Be blessed.

I did not realize Coach Calvin Phillips had passed until September 3, 2022. He and II taught together years ago at the Alternative Placement Center. He was so well thought of — a man of class, character, morals, and he was so humorous. He was a fine teacher and a wonderful person to know. I am so sorry for your loss. May he rest in peace!

Sending Condolences to the Phillips Family.
My memories go back to 1977-79 as a football player at Cleveland High School, where Calvin Phillips aka “Coach Cool Cal” was my defensive back coach. He took his coaching very seriously and expected alot out of his defensive backs. He was fair, understanding and will be greatly missed.
Kenneth Clark, aka Cool Ray

I had the honor of meeting Mr. Phillips (Calvin) in my hometown of Cleveland, Tx. a number of years ago by way of another friend of ours. Whenever we met or hooked up, I addressed him as either Calvin or Coach Phillips. He was a wonderful man, an extraordinary man, and a very disciplined man. He was extremely passionate about his profession, extremely pleasant, and a joy to be around. I recall Coach Phillip's generosity, -in that he involved himself in worthwhile civic projects (with the youth) in the neighborhood. The City of Cleveland and the community was made much richer for his having lived there, taught there, and coached there. I contend that my life was made richer because I knew him. Coach Philips was a great companion. I will always think of him as a kind man and friend who took a real interest in others. My mom of 96 years told me this evening that she remembered Mr. Calvin (Coach Phillips). I am convinced that anyone who knew him will never forget him.
To the Family: The McGowen family is praying for you. We send you our love to give you strength to bear your sorrow.

"Coach" (as I knew him) was a truly good man, and one of a kind. He was funny, kind, caring, and encouraging. He genuinely celebrated my accomplishments with me as an adult returning to school to complete my degree. I am brokenhearted to see that he has passed away - he was a bright presence in this world, but I know he has gained his eternal reward and is no longer in pain. He will be sorely missed.
