82, died peacefully, May 3, 2002, at the Inn at Wyngate in Weirton, WV, following a brief illness, Carl was born Jan. 31, 1920 in Slovan, a son to Parsenia and Rudolph Filipponi. After graduating from Union High School in 1938, he entered the employ of Petrucci's Market in Burgettstown and worked until he enlisted in the Army Air Corp in 1942 and proudly served in WWII. He returned from military duty in 1945 and became the manager of the meat & deli dept. at Petrucci's Market. He developed one of the first hot foods service deli in Western PA and eventually turned his sights to catering, developing a thriving business. After retiring in 1988 he increased his activities in the Burgettstown community. He was a charter member of the Barto Post VFW & Slovan serving as their first quartermaster. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #3440 and was a volunteer fireman for the Slovan Fire Dept. He was a member of the Burgettstown Senior Citizen Center where prior to his illness he participated in Meals on Wheels and the planning of their new facility. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes RC Church where he married Mary Louise Panconi on Aug. 15, 1955. Surviving, in addition to his wife, is a son Carl John and his wife Rose of Moon Twp., a daughter Mary Emma Martin and her husband Keith, grandchildren Sam and Hannah Martin of Waynesburg and one brother Quento Filipponi of Oakmont, and many much loved nieces and nephews. Deceased are three sisters Anita Gavatorta, Kathryn Sciamanna, Nell Petrucci and one brother Felix Filipponi. Friends will be received from 7-9pm Sat. and 2-4 and 6-9pm Sun. in the LEE & MARTIN FUNERAL HOME, 73 Highland Ave., Burgettstown. Funeral Mass Mon., May 6, 2002 at 10am in Our Lady of Lourdes RC Church, Burgettstown. Interment in the Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Our Lady of Lourdes Elementary School, Main St., Burgettstown, 15021.
