Carl Gustavson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 20 to Jan. 22, 2021.
MIDDLETOWN - Carl G. Gustavson III, clandestine poet and avid lover of mythology, legends, classical literature, chess and music, passed away on Friday, Jan. 15, 2021 in Middletown, OH following a brief illness.
Son of deceased Ohio University History Professor Carl G. Gustavson II and the late bird-carver Caryl Jennings Gustavson, Carl Jr. was born March 31, 1945 in Hamilton, OH. Carl graduated in 1963 from Athens High School. While attending Harvard University he was diagnosed with schizophrenia and subsequently retired to his hometown where he led a relatively quiet life. After a happy stint working for Athens National Bank, Carl went on to dedicate much of his time to his passion: writing poetry. Carl was married to Janice Gaughan of Vincent, OH from 1972-1982. Struggling with chronic mental illness throughout his adult life, Carl showed an inspirational stoicism and was a remarkably affectionate father. He was well known throughout Athens for his impassioned soap-box speeches on politics, education, the battle of Good and Evil, theories of time travel, and "The Game."
Carl's daughter, Lisa Grace Gustavson, would like to thank the people and businesses of Athens for their incredible grace and warm hearts, in particular: Russ and the staff at Little Professor Bookstore, which kept him up to date on all the latest works of mythology and science fiction; Ski at the former Haffa's comic shop, who procured all the best issues for his extensive collections; the beautiful clerks at Athens Video and Blockbuster, who patiently made sure he got copies of special posters, such as the coveted Sheena; the former School Kids' Records, which special-ordered vinyl, tape, and CD's to ensure him decades of Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky, Wagner, and all the latest girl bands; his patient optometrist Dr. Thomas Quinn; the Episcopal Church; and the staff at Burger King, which kept him hydrated while he met up with his gang to philosophize on life, the universe and everything. She would also like to offer warm thanks to the staff that cared and looked out for him at the Athens Mental Health Center, The Gathering Place, Beasley Mills Apartments, and Middletown's Close to Home.
Carl is survived by his former wife, Jan; their daughter, Lisa, her husband, Francis Xavier Mathieu, and their precious boys, Nikko and Téo; as well as his brother, Eric David Gustavson and his sister, Martha Gustavson Marks and their beautiful families.
Lisa has been deeply touched by the flowers, chocolates, and especially the kind words and uplifting stories shared with her.
In lieu of further flowers, she would like to suggest remembering Carl through donations to: The Gathering Place, Athens Mental Health Center, NAMI (the National Alliance on Mental Illness) or CODA (Co-Dependents Anonymous) to enable them to continue to offer help, support and inspiration to others in need.

I only just now saw this space for leaving comments, so I will leave brief one for anyone who visits this site in the future.

My family and Carl´s were very close. I fondly remember the Sunday afternoons when we would gather alternately at our house or their´s for "Popcorn and Ice Cream." Those were fun times.

As has been said by others, Carl seemed to have a bright future ahead of him until mental illness struck in his sophomore year at Harvard. The Carl I knew was gone, and in its place was almost another person. There would be glimpses occasionally of the old person, but they would be brief and ephemeral. However, over the years I grew to understand and appreciate that it really was the same person that I had known and loved since childhood.

Now he "belongs to the ages" and Heaven is a better place as Carl George Gustavson can once again spread his wings and soar!

My brother Carl loved to read because books and comic books awakened his sense of adventure and possibility in the world surrounding our house. He climbed the neighborhood trees far higher than any of the rest of us dared to go and loved roaming in the woods in the hills above Utah Place. Favorite spots were the Laughing Rock, which offered a charming view of Utah Place and the old airport, and Fat Man's Squeeze, a narrow, steep, treacherous passage through the rocks which Carl loved wiggling through. He always came home from his wanderings with tales to tell. In high school he displayed his talents early on the track where he eventually finished third in the district, if memory serves, in both the 100- and 220-yard dashes. In football, despite being one of the smallest players on the team at 140 pounds, he finally made it into the starting line-up as a senior as a safety and fleet halfback. He was gone if he found an open space, ultimately scoring a half-dozen touchdowns on long runs, the most memorable a 60-yard punt return against Logan on Homecoming that broke a scoreless tie and led to a decisive win for the Bulldogs. An excellent student and great storyteller with a clever sense of humor, Carl was president of the class of '63 at AHS.

As a family, we all appreciate the great kindness and generosity shown to Carl by so many in Athens, both those who knew him when he was young and carefree, and those who only knew him in his challenging adult life.

What I remember most about Uncle Carl was his gigantic smile (legend had it that he could fit an entire apple into his mouth!), and his heartfelt advice to us when we were growing up. He taught us many lessons, including about the importance of accepting others who different from ourselves, and valuing them for who they are. May you rest in peace, Uncle Carl.

I heard all the family stories: the fast athlete, the quick wit, the natural born leader, perhaps the future politician. I, his brother-in-law, arrived a bit late, as mental illness had already entered the picture and taken much of that from him. What I did see and know over these past 48 years was a gentle soul, whose musings on the universe, time travel, Harvard, Vince Lombardi, politics, poetry and pretty women, often made all the more interesting because of his own unique perception of reality, made Carl a special person. He taught us that some lives, which may be lived on the margins of what we define as normal, are every bit as real, meaningful and precious as any and all others.

Carl loved Ohio, storytelling, and coca cola. Everyone in Athens knew him at one time or the other and he will be forever cherished. There is only one true Uncle Carl and it's this man right here.

I didn’t know Carl well, but I worked at the bank with him. Lisa, I worked there when you were born and I remember how proud he was. My father also knew Caryl well through the wood carvers group. He always enjoyed her company & Ora Anderson at their meetings. Prayers for all of your family. I know a kind soul has passed on

Lisa, you really brought to life Carl's interactions and interests, and how thoughtful to note many of the people in his daily life. "Impassioned," "gentle," "affectionate," "stoic," "quiet," "struggling," "affable"--they all fit together. Thanks for the good memories!

Carl was born with a wonderful personality, quick wit and natural leadership qualities. Unfortunately he wasn't able to enjoy the future he should have had. But his gentleness, sense of humor and keen interest in so many things of this world and beyond sustained him throughout his life. His last years were peaceful. Freed from terrestrial bonds, I
like to think he is soaring with the Valkyries.

Thank you for sharing your beautiful thoughts. I didn’t know Carl very well but his mother always cared for us kids on Utah Place. We went ice skating in the winter with them. Also I remember Caryl knocking on our door one night to let us know we could see the Northern Lights at the end of our street. I prayed with Caryl at the end of her life and now I’m praying for peace for all your family. I’m sure Carl is in a better place with his mother and father now. God bless you all and know that you knew a very special soul.

Most of my best memories from grade school involve Carl and his great family. He had the best comic book collection I have ever seen, and he could always make our adventures fun. He faced enormous challenges in life and managed them with great courage. I will always admire him, and I will miss him. My condolences to his family.
