Carl Haggard

Carl Haggard, 76, of New Castle, Ind., passed away Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2009, at his residence after a battle with cancer. He was born May 13, 1932, in Mintonville, Ky., the son of Joe Mitchell and Lou Vada Moore Haggard.He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1951 to 1954 and was retired from Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in New Castle and the United Paperworkers of America. He was a Boy Scout leader, and he enjoyed coon hunting, woodworking and gardening. He also loved gospel music. Carl was very active in the lives of his children and grandchildren.He is survived by four children, Gary Lee Haggard, Deborah Lynn (and Barry) Thurman, Gregory Reece (and Gail) Haggard, and Marcus Dewayne (and Michelle) Haggard, all of New Castle; grandchildren Bobby Haggard (and fiancée Marti McDaniel), Hope (and Derek) Winship, Jeremy Ward, Brittany (and Brock) Davis, Stephen Thurman, and Ashley Thurman, all of New Castle, and Micah (and Frank) Aguilar of Valrico, Fla., Trisha (and Mike) Millard of Peoria, Ill., Chris (and Brooke) Haggard, Jaime (and Eric) Moffitt, Rachel Haggard (and companion Adam Dawson), Shelby Haggard, and Samantha Haggard, all of New Castle, and Kiley (and Brett) Bloom of Laveen, Ariz.; great grandchildren Kyrah Haggard, Sydnee Haggard, Paige Norris, Dustin McDaniel, Ethan Winship, Carmen Davis, Katelynn Haggard, Jacob Aguilar, Thomas Millard, Riley Millard, Lacy Haggard, Macy Haggard, Kailee Haggard, Kain Massengale, Madilyn Moffitt, Alainey Moffitt, Megan McCarty, Andrea McCarty, and Shania McCarty; three sisters, Geneva (and Lloyd) Eastham of Somerset, Ky., Joyce (and Ron) Neikirk of Somerset, and Hester (and Estel) Gover of Aurora, Ind.; and several nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his wife, Shelvia Jean Haggard; a son, Donnie Ray Haggard; a daughter-in-law: Kathy Haggard; brothers Roy and Oliver Haggard; and sisters Beulah Hall, Illa Wesley, Imogene Roberts, Beatrice Stringer, Zelma Haggard, and Marie Haggard.Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27, at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Brother Bobby Slagle officiating.Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery.Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Feb. 26.Memorial contributions may be made to Calvary Baptist Church or Henry County Cancer Society with envelopes available at the funeral home.Online condolences may be made at: www.hinsey-brown.com.
