Carla Kamhi Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Nov. 24 to Nov. 27, 2016.
4/20/1951 to 11/9/2016 At the age of 65 Carla passed away at home in Sacramento after surviving more than two years with pancreatic cancer. She leaves behind her children Tamar (Eric) Lazarus and Jonathan (Sharon) Foster, grandchildren Martin and Claire Foster, mother Sheila Kamhi and many dear friends. Carla was born on Long Island, NY, to Martin and Sheila Kamhi, and later moved with her parents and two brothers to Tuscon, AZ, Redlands, CA, and Santa Barbara, CA, where she attended UCSB and earned a degree in Anthropology. After college, she moved to Sacramento where she started her family and worked for more than 30 years helping some of the most vulnerable individuals and families in our community. She was devoted to her friends, especially to a small group of women who have met monthly for decades to discuss books and share their lives. Many will remember her for her outspoken opinions, wit, and encyclopedic knowledge of ancient history. Carla lived a full, active life, almost to her last days, attending plays, dancing with her Zumba class, taking long walks along the canals in her neighborhood and enthusiastically playing with her young grandchildren. Most importantly, she will be remembered by her children for her unconditional love, support and encouragement. She is greatly missed. Funeral services to be held December 4 at 10:00 am at Home of Peace Jewish Cemetery, 6200 Stockton Blvd, Sacramento, CA 95824. In lieu of flowers, please consider contributing in Carla's honor to the Friends of the Belle Cooledge Library, 5600 South Land Park Drive, Sacramento CA 95822.

Have been thinking of Carla a lot lately with all the rain and high water in the Sacramento River. Remembered sharing stories of her looking out her third story windows at the high river when she lived next to the levy in 86. Also loved her grand piano stories. Was very sad to see in the county retiree's news letter that she had died. She was a very special lady. I will hold memories if her close to my heart.

I knew Candy (Carla) at UCSB, we were part of the 'Loungies' (Scholars); a group that taught me to play bridge and have some fun while tackling our classes. We'd meet between classes at the 'lounge': listen to records (remember Laura Nyro?): talk with our counselors (Janet with her cigarette holder); find a foursome to play bridge, or sometimes Mah Jongg, and sometimes just talk. Candy was living with Ellie at the time, but would come & visit me & borrow clothes (she loved my tie-dyed velvet skirt). I remember her mad at the riot police (yup, that was the 70's), who had picked her up for being out after curfew when she had walked to the store (to pick up some female unmentionable products). I remember her happy at the Grateful Dead concert, and elated when she could defeat a bridge contract. I recall her coming by to have me light a cigarette for her during Seder, and introducing me to my first taste of Halvah (spelling?) when we took my little 66 Fiat down to visit her mom in the Pacific Palasades on break. I am sad that I didn't keep in touch with her, and to her family, am so sorry for your loss.

Carla's spiritual impact was immense. Carla's vibrancy even to the end was inspiring. I thank her for her example of how to live happily each day. Thank you Carla for your brightness and light.

I am so sorry for your loss. Carla was a consummate professional. I know she worked tirelessly within her job to assure the recipients of the CA In-Home Supportive Services program received the maximum benefits each was entitled to receive. She was an absolute pleasure to work with and a very caring individual.

She was Grandma to my great grandchildren, Martin and Claire. She seemed so young and vibrant with them. It seems way too soon for them to lose her. I'm glad that I met her and am so sorry she's gone.
