Carol Geoghegan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 13, 2025.
Carol Geoghegan, better known as Van, passed away peacefully, in her sleep, on March 6, 2025. She was born on September 21, 1939, and adopted by Helen and Arthur Van Steenberg on May 8, 1941. She lived in Mt. Vernon, NY and then, North White Plains, NY. She attended Pocantico Hills School from Kindergarten through 8th grade. The family then moved to Chappaqua, NY where she graduated from Horace Greeley High School and went on to graduate from Vermont College in Montpelier, VT. Sports were always a big part of Van's life and she excelled at many, both in high school and at Lochearn Summer Camp where she attended every summer from kindergarten through 8th grade. As an adult, she became a New York State Bowling Champion. She made it a point to remain friends with classmates and camp friends and those bonds are still strong today.

In 1967, Van moved to Tarrytown, NY and raised her children there. She was an active member in the community. In the late 1970s, she was instrumental in starting a Girl's Softball League because the town didn't offer any sports for girls. This gave other towns in the area a blueprint for creating their own Girl's Softball Leagues and many are still around today. She was also involved with the Tarrytown Seniors and held the position of President for a few years. That was a tremendous source of pride for her. She loved the camaraderie she felt when they were together. Her longest membership in Tarrytown was that as a parishioner at Christ Church. She loved her faith and fellowship that Christ Church provided her. She ran the kitchen, which they lovingly named, Van's Café and she fed many a Tarrytowner from there. Her longtime partner, friend, and Jeopardy! Jouster, Gene Wilsea, predeceased her in 2005.

Van retired from AT&T after many years of service. Throughout her years, she earned numerous awards for salesmanship and customer service. The company took her to lots of different assignments throughout the Tri State Area however, she finished her tenure with them working across the street from the World Trade Center. The friends she worked with there were besties for the restie. After retiring, she volunteered with the Pioneers which was a charitable organization associated with AT&T.

After Gene's passing, Van moved to Washington State. She wanted a change of scenery. However, it was way too cold for her, so she moved to Naples, Florida to be near her daughter and granddaughter. She was an active member of St. Paul's Church in Naples. She was Secretary and then, President of the Episcopal Christian Woman's Group, a lector, an usher, and always available for Fellowship.

She is survived by her children, Gregg Geoghegan of Saugerties, NY and Pamela Geoghegan Rivera of Naples, FL. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Jake Geoghegan of NYC, Harley Geoghegan of Bozeman, MT and Sabine Rivera of Naples, FL. Van also remained close with her former Son-in-Law Yaguer Rivera of Naples, FL. She is predeceased by her adoptive parents, Helen and Arthur Van Steenberg and her brother, Peter Van Steenberg.

There will be a service and interment at St. Paul's Church in Naples, FL on March 24, 2025 at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers please donate to a charity of your choice.

This is my second attempt at this!
Van was the best. Upbeat and positive till the end despite some real health challenges. We were a tight knit group at Horace Greeley High School where Van graduated. She was always active and helped plan our reunions.
More recently, whenever there was a catastrophe in CA Van was first on the phone to check on me. I´ll miss you Van. Love, Susie Hoyt Holloway

Van´s spirit, spunk, and sense of humor were my favorite aspects of her personality. She was one of my best friends when I lived in Tarrytown (`92-`97), and I will always recall how kind and inclusive she was to me, especially when I needed her most. Van left this world a better place, and I´m sure she´s already making her Redeemer crack up.

Van was such an outgoing person. She lived her life exactly how she wanted and loved her family so much. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Van also performed on many of my Chancel/Sermon Plays at Christ Church. When I asked her to play a fiesty character she would say 'I know you wrote this for me!'- she was right!! Van's charisma will be missed and remembered with a laugh and a smile!

Aunt Van, as we affectionately called her, attended many a holiday at the Roth household. She found great humor in telling the story of the time I told Uncle Gene I was in a mood! She will be missed and her legacy will live on in the memories we have of her. Sending love to her children and grandchildren.

I was one of Van's neighbors in Tarrytown during the last century, and she was fantastic. Her cat Cecil was legendary. I moved away but we kept in touch and even met up when she visited Las Vegas, where I was living at the time. Her upbeat mood was as infectious as it was inspiring. I'm so grateful for the time we spent together.

We were fortunate to know Van through church. She touched so many hearts. I will miss her humor and how she always made you feel loved. We will celebrate her life and she will continue to live in our hearts forever . We will meet again but until then, thanks for being a friend.
