Carol Guebert Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 7, 2023.

Carol M.Guebert passed away peacefully on January 14, 2023, and our world will be quite a bit less cheery without her. She was born in Boston on October 31,1934 to Walter and Winifred (Winnie) McDermott.

She is survived by her husband, Wesley R. Guebert; and preceeded in death by her parents and beloved sister Joan (Lionel) Roy.

Her children never tired of having a Halloween mom. Beyond trick or treating in childhood (where trick or treating time was bracketed by buttered noodles before, and her birthday cake after) she loved the ongoing tradition of her uproarious birthday costume parties for adults.

Carol and Wes met in Boston in 1956. Carol had completed her math degree at Regis College and was working for the Raytheon Company (possibly on guided missiles for the F-4 Phantom). Wes had been assigned as the IBM sales representative to Raytheon.

That chance meeting led to courtship and then marriage on August 23,1958.

Six children soon followed: Judy (Gary) Carter, Evie (George) Wenick, Steve (Judy) Guebert, Janice (Jim) Teixeira, Rick (Julie) Guebert, and Liddy (Jon) Heath. We would list the 15 grandchildren, but that's what social media is for. At her passing, Carol also had 7 1?2 great- grandchildren.

The Guebert family spent 15 years living in the Boston and Stamford (CT) areas. In 1974 the family moved to Atlanta. It was here Carol found her true calling as matriarch of the extended Guebert clan - earning her life-long nickname Muzi or The Muz.

Through years of her children's schooling and work, Carol's hospitality extended to the many friends they made along the way. They all called her Muzi, which made them part of the family. As everyone became adults, she was still The Muz.

She loved parties and the music of Frank Sinatra and Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass. Also painting, knitting, bridge, paddle tennis (a precursor to pickle ball), and whatever the kids were into: Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, soccer, and marching band. She was an enthusiastic member of the Atlanta Yacht Club, both as a social organizer and a diligent volunteer at many Club events.

Carol was deeply devoted to her Catholic faith and volunteered selflessly at every church she attended. Amongst other activities, at St. Jude's she sang in the choir and at St. Peter Chanel she helped count the Sunday collections. Whether in fellowship with family or her community, her faith was at the center of her life.

It's hard to summarize The Muz. She hated cooking but she did it anyway. She freely offered advice - appropriate/welcome or not - to everyone and anyone. She never stopped correcting our English, which may be why this has been a challenge to write. She was clever and funny and always had everyone laughing.

In addition to stray people, she also took in a large gray, stray cat. Muzi named her "Porky," and saw to her needs as the kids were moving out to colleges and apartments. Maybe "The Pork" was looking after The Muz. We'll never know.

She didn't let her dementia define her. She was always the one who knew what was going on. Making the plans. Telling everyone their role. And giving advice. Losing that ability was perhaps the saddest part of her disease. Her whole life, Carol knew everyone and introduced them to each other. While she may have lost the ability to make those introductions, even now the relationships she helped forge carry her love beyond her lifespan.

There will be a funeral mass on Friday, April 14, 2023 at Our Lady of the Assumption at 10:00 A.M. The service will immediately be followed by an interment also at Our Lady of the Assumption. The church is located at 1406 Hearst Drive, Brookhaven, GA, 30319.

In lieu of flowers, please send contributions in her name to her most recent parish church, St. Peter Chanel (11330 Woodstock Road, Roswell, GA, 30075.)

In addition, the family will hold a Celebration of Carol's Life on Saturday, April 15, 2023, at the clubhouse of the Atlanta Yacht Club, 7120 Yacht Club Drive, Acworth, GA, 30102 . (Please send any questions to [email protected]. If you plan on attending, please email us at the same address.) Stop by anytime from 3:00 - 5:00pm. Light refreshments will be provided, stories will be told, and Wes will probably stay longer than he would like. Muzi wouldn't have it any other way.

I first met Carol in 1965 when I was a British student travelling round the USA that summer and I was introduced by friends of friends. I was invited to stay for a week (or maybe a little longer) in early September to help Carol with the 3 youngest children (pre-Libby) whilst Judy and Evie were starting school. I was made to feel so welcome and it was wonderful to stay with such a lovely family. Over the years I introduced my family (husband Alan and daughter Abbie) to my adopted American family either when we visited the US or they came over to the UK. Carol was such a lovely, hospitable, warm, fun, interesting person and I know she will be hugely missed by the family and everyone who knew her. Rest in peace, Carol.
Sending our love and condolences, BJ (aka Big Judy), Alan and Abbie.
