Carol Ann Hoagland :: 1945 - 2024

Carol Ann Hoagland, 79, of Bay Village, Ohio passed away on April 12, 2024, at Fairview Hospital in Fairview Park, Ohio surrounded by loved ones who will remember her by living their lives, as she did, to the fullest.

She was born on March 29, 1945, in Tyler, Texas and was a daughter of the late E. Carl and Mary Mattern. Her childhood involved living in Texas, Washington DC, Colorado and eventually Ohio.

An avid people connector, she spent her life involved in many social activities often giving more of herself than she got. She valued faith, family, friends, neighbors, community and sharing her God given talents. Carol was passionate about cooking, good food, her gardens, keeping the birds (and a big fat squirrel) in her yard fed, travel, the arts and music, especially when it was shared with others. After learning violin in her childhood, she renewed her interest in and love of playing when son John started playing the cello. Over the last decade, she so loved her small strings group and friends she met as a proud member of the New Horizons Orchestra at Baldwin Wallace. A skilled artist, she pushed herself and her abilities to always learning more from Cleveland area artists in a love of painting, mainly in watercolor.

Carol was a natural teacher, worked in the Bay and Fairview Park schools in many roles with kids aged from pre-school to high school, a proud volunteer at Cleveland Clinic's Fairview Hospital flower shop for many years, and involvement in many Bay community groups over many decades.

Beloved wife of 52 years to the late William A. Hoagland.; devoted mother of John (Nancy), Tom (Melissa), and Joyce (Bruce). Doting 'Nana' to Jane, Jack, Lauren, Sean and Mitchell. Sister-in-law to Debbie (Gerald) and Susie (Richard). Sister to Jeannie (Mack) and Aunt to Noelle, Andrea, Marit, Emily, Scott and Brian. Cousin to Bill "Bill William" (Val). She was loved by so many and will be missed dearly.

A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, May 11th at 11:00am at Bay United Methodist Church, 29931 Lake Road, Bay Village OH 44140. Those wishing to express their fondest memories of Carol may join the family there or by visiting the online obituaries website.

We have always shared Christmas cards every year, and wondered why I did not get one of her most beautiful, hand painted cards this year. I am so very sad to know that she has passed. We played for many years in the New Horizon's Orchestra at BW. She was a most gracious and loving Mistress of the Orchestra for many years. She was a team player and a good violin friend. After I had left the NHO, we still kept in touch with Christmas cards. We will miss her very much, and keep her, and her family, in our Rosary prayers. We will also have Masses said for her soul. Requiescat in Pace, our beloved Carol!! <3 <3 <3

Carol you brought me a big pot of your chicken soup when I was sick. Oh my what a wonderful, thoughtful, gift. But that was you in all aspects of your life. I will sadly miss our conversations, our shared meals, listening to your violin as we all played together so many mornings and evenings. I will always miss your enthusiasm for life, your talent as a watercolor artist, and the love you shared with all of us. Dear Carol, you have left us far, far too soon.

Carol and I were first cousins. We lived next door to each other for the first 6-7 years of our lives. We enjoyed playing together, but I was devastated when I found out she was moving to Dallas. We still saw each other occasionally over the next 20 years. Finally, after she moved to Cleveland and I took a job in Rochester, we got to visit more often. Carol became an artist and an accomplished violinist. Over the years, a highlight of Christmas was getting one of her hand painted cards. We will miss that. Perhaps her best quality was her concern for other people. She was always willing to help. She never met someone she didn't like. We will miss her greatly. Rest peacefully in God's hands, dear cousin.
