Carol Cecelia Neighbour, 55, of Silvis, Illinois, formerly of Moline, died Friday, March 28,
2008 at her residence. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 2, 2008, at 9:30 a.m. at DeRoo
Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, Moline.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, April 1, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home, where a rosary will be
ecited at 4 p.m. In accordance with Carol's wishes, her body will be cremated. There will be a private
family burial of her remains on April 3, at which an honor squad of the Moline American Legion, Post
246 will conduct military rites. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Milan No-Kill Animal
Shelter.
Carol was born on May 16, 1952, in Moline, Illinois, the eldest daughter of Hubbard B. and Marjorie N.
Neighbour. She graduated from Moline High School. She was a 1974 honors graduate of the University
of Iowa, where she received a bachelor of science degree in nursing. She was a member of Alpha Phi
Sorority.
Carol was a veteran and a naval officer, serving as a lieutenant in the Navy Nurse Corps as a charge
nurse at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego, California from 1982 to 1984.
Carol's career in nursing involved employment as a registered nurse in a number of different medical
facilities: at the former Moline Public Hospital and the former United Medical Center, and the former
Lutheran Hospital, all in Moline; at Trinity Medical Center in Rock Island, and Genesis Medical Center
in Davenport, Iowa; at Illini Hospital in Silvis, Illinois; and at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in
Chicago.
During her long nursing career she worked in many different fields, including emergency room, floor
nursing, cardiac care, intensive care, neo-natal care, psychiatric care, extended care, and hospice
nursing. More recently, since her retirement in 2004, she was a volunteer at the Faith Lutheran Church
Literacy Program.
She had an active and inquiring mind, was an avid reader, and had many intellectual interests, but her
family was of paramount importance to Carol. She was devoted to her parents, siblings, and nephews
and nieces, but always left some room to exercise her love of animals, especially cats.
Her survivors include her father; sister and brother in law, Amy and Jeffrey VanEchaute, Moline;
brother and sister in law, David and Mary Neighbour, Davenport; nieces and nephews, Margaret,
James and Clare VanEchaute, and Sarah Neighbour. Carol was preceded in death by her mother. Online
condolences may be sent to www.deroofuneralhome.com.

Carol and I grew up together, attended the same schools, and followed similar paths in life. Although I don't feel I knew her well or was close, I found her always a very interesting and glamorous women. RIP

Please accept our deepest sympathy to all of Carol's family. My husband and I both worked with Carol at Illini Hospital and have very fond memories of her. The very best memory is that she always had a smile on her face and made me laugh every day that we worked together. It didn't matter what kind of day it was or how busy it was she always made the day better. What a great nurse and co-worker. She will missed by so many! We will be thinking of all of you.
