Carol Watson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 6, 2025.
Carol Sue Nichols Watson, age 80, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2025, in Fort Worth, Texas, after a courageous battle with vascular dementia.

Carol was born to George Hart Nichols, Sr. and Myrtle Charlotte "Mickey" Nichols in Kansas City, Kansas, on April 7, 1944. The Nichols soon moved to Abilene, Texas, where Carol spent her formative years in the place that she proudly called her hometown. There, she delighted in following around her older brothers, George and Phil, and revelled in becoming a tomboy who shot BB guns, played baseball, climbed trees and collected baseball cards like they did. A proud Alta Vista Rooster and Cooper Cougar, Carol graduated high school in 1962 and stayed close to home, choosing to attend McMurry University. In 1967, she earned degrees in Spanish and English Literature, reflecting her deep passion for language and learning.

Carol's first job out of college took her to the East Texas town of Gladewater. It was a short stint, but her time there ignited a love for teaching English and Spanish in rural communities. She landed in Houston just a year later and was introduced to an Assistant District Attorney named Robert Watson. On their first date, Carol cooked pork chops and wild rice for dinner with their respective roommates and Bob fell head over heels in love. They were married two years later in her parents' Abilene home on April 21, 1971, and Bob would continue to request that very meal on a regular basis for the rest of their forty-three years together. The newlyweds moved to Bob's hometown of Mineral Wells and 1974 brought along the birth of their daughter, Shelley. Just ten short months later, Carol gave birth to their second daughter, Nikki, and the Watson family of four was complete. For the next nineteen years, Carol stayed home to take care of the girls but never missed an opportunity to teach. And when she wasn't ferrying the girls to their myriad activities, she was volunteering, coaching, cooking, golfing or playing tennis.

When Shelley and Nikki flew the nest, Carol went back to the classroom in a few small school communities, but none held her heart quite like Perrin-Whitt, where she taught and coached various grades for several years. The arrival of grandchildren and Bob's burgeoning book collection brought about her retirement but that hardly meant she slowed down. Until Bob's death in 2014, they spent many of their free days traveling in search of rare books, adding to their vast collection and accumulating more dear friends along the way. In the decade to come, Carol continued to read and travel for pleasure and relied upon her family, friends (old and new, because she never met a stranger!) and precious rescue mutts to keep her busy.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert Floyd Watson; and her brothers, David Lee Nichols, Philip Charles Nichols, and George Hart Nichols, Jr.

Carol is survived by her daughters, Shelley Leigh Juliao (Sam) and Nikki Lynne Erb; her grandsons, Michael "Cade" Fuller and Boston Hart Juliao; her granddaughters, Isabel Hart Juliao and Caroline Sue Erb; her devoted sister-in-law WT "Tootsie" Nichols; cherished nieces, nephews, and their children; and countless friends from Abilene, Mineral Wells, Weatherford, and beyond.

Those who knew Carol will forever cherish the ease in which she laughed, the delight she took in talking about her family and pets, the joy she brought to friends, new and old, and the seemingly endless generosity of her spirit. May her legacy continue to inspire and bring comfort to all who were fortunate enough to know her.

We welcome all to attend the memorial service to celebrate her life which will be held Saturday, February 15th, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at :

What a shock to learn that my friend from the second grade at Alta Vista Elementary in Abilene recently passed away, and I had no idea. By chance this evening, I clicked on my saved emails file with her name on it and came across all the lovely pictures she had sent me, one by one, of the beautiful Chihouly Exhibit we went to at the Dallas Arboretum in 2013. We spent many hours together as we grew up, she ate breakfast every morning at my house before my daddy took us to Alta Vista. In high school, we were cheerleaders together for 2 years and part of the first graduating class of Cooper High School in Abilene. She tricked me into moving to Houston from Lubbock after I graduated from Texas Tech, to live with her and another girl from Abilene. She met Robert & I dated his roommate, then we parted ways. They got married & I was transferred to Los Angeles by my employer, Occidental Petroleum. She was responsible for my 40+ year career in accounting, because she met a man, in Rosa's Cantina, the bar at the singles apartment where she lived in Houston, who was looking for a receptionist for his CPA firm & she got me a job with him before I even moved there, because my dad was a CPA in Abilene & she convinced him I would be the perfect person. We reconnected at the 50th high school reunion in Abilene for Cooper High, & I began going to their home in Weatherford to visit, attend events, and I housesat with dogs while they traveled. She had a very hard time when Bob passed away, after years of deterioration with his illness. She lived a remarkable life because she was a remarkable person and I wish I had been at her funeral to send her off to be with Bob, George, Mickey & Phil.

My first memory of Carol is with Granny, "Mutt" in her kitchen and they were cooking. I have wonderful memories of her and Bob, while I was taking care of Shelley and Nikki and family Thanksgivings at the ranch. Carol was also such a warm and genuine person. I can close my eyes and see her wonderful smile and hear her laugh. I can't be there for her memorial, I am out out town, but my thoughts and prayers are with all the family, especially Shelley and Nikki. Love to everyone.

I have many great memories of Carol (and Bob) and what they did for us crazy kids that they opened their house to. I often compare their house to those that you see in sitcoms where the neighbors or friends just walk in without having to knock. Sometimes when I see that I think, "Nobody does that." Then I remember the Watson house and that the only time I knocked was probably the first time I went there. Bob answered the door and looked at me like I was crazy for knocking. That's one of the things I learned from Carol - to be relaxed about the coming and going of my own kids and their friends, and to open your home up so they have a place to go. I learned from her my love for animals (especially dogs). I already liked them, but her conversations with them in the kitchen were priceless and showed me what a big part of the family they can be. I've had at least one dog in my house since! She will be missed, but she definitely left great memories and lessons with all that knew her. If you miss her great qualities, just look to Shelley and Nikki and you'll see them there.

Carol was such a big part of growing up in Mineral Wells for me! My heart goes out to Shelley and Nikki, whom are two amazing ladies that both Bob and Carol did an amazing job raising. They certainly broke the mold with Carol, and I have so many memories of spending time at their house, seeing Carol playing tennis and golf at the country club, and always cracking a joke (sometimes at my expense)! She had incredible wit, and was obviously a very smart and intelligent lady that always listened to you and could give such wonderful advice. Bob, Carol, Shelley and Nikki's house was the place to hang, and I'll never forget the parties and get togethers in the basement...we had so much fun with the Watsons and I know both girls will keep the fun going. Carol will be sorely missed but I know Bob was eagerly awaiting her, and I will always have the best memories of Carol...she made growing up so fun and I will NEVER forget that smirk and laugh that she could belt out! Wish I could give her a giant hug, she was incredible :)

I loved Mrs. Watson as a teacher at Perrin-Whitt but, she was also someone who would listen and give good advice. One thing I remember in Spanish class was making Mexican fried bananas they were so good!!
Attending sports activities with her was always fun too! She was just someone you gravitated towards.
She will be dearly missed! Prayers for the family during this time, and in the days to come.

My most sincere condolences! my thoughts and prayers for all the family! I will forever cherish the memories of Mrs.Watson when she taught me at Perrin-Whitt . She embraced all of us like part of her family. She was my Spanish teacher but actually learned English also . My favorite Teacher forever! Love , Patricia Vela!

Mrs. Watson was the best Spanish teacher we ever had at Perrin! I had so much fun in her classes. She also sponsored the Spanish Club. After graduation, she took me and a handful of other girls (the Spanish Club) on a trip to San Antonio. We had the best time!
I remember another time she took us to lunch at El Paseo. We were supposed to order our food and drinks in Spanish. We were all nervous about doing it correctly. However, one of the girls that was actually very fluent in Spanish, without Mrs. Watson hearing, told the hostess to give us a waiter that only spoke English. I was disappointed and relieved at the same time.
Mrs. Watson was absolutely one of my favorite people in high school. I always thought it was the coolest thing that we both had April birthdays. I remember her fondly, and always think of her April 7th.

There was no one quite like Mrs. Watson! She was a wonderful teacher, Coach, and had a great passion for supporting her students! She loved her two girls and Bob and that was very evident in all that she did. Much love and prayers for the family! We at Perrin Whitt loved her as much as she loved us!

My first day in her Spanish class she asked about an author and wanted to know if we were related. It was the first time I ever met someone who knew my grandfather Benjamin Capps and had his books. I later got them autographed for her and her husband.

I was so sad to hear of the passing of sweet Carol. She was such a dear friend to me and she was such a wonderful person. My heart is filled with wonderful memories of the joyful times that we spent together. I know that she was welcomed home by Bob and that they are celebrating in Heaven together. Carol touched the many lives that she was a part of and she truly had a life well lived. She will be greatly missed. I will be praying for her family, friends, and loved ones. Much love to you all!
