Carolyn Johns Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 28, 2025.
Fort Myers - Carolyn Measell Johns, born March 31, 1934 to Evelyn and LeGrand "Duke" Measell in Barberton, Ohio passed away peacefully on August 17, 2025 at the age of 91 at The Larson Medical Center at Shell Point Retirement Community, Fort Myers, Florida. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years Karl Johns.

Carolyn graduated from Miami University, Oxford Ohio with a B.S. in Art Education and later received a Master of Arts from John Carroll University. She happily taught Art Education in the Ohio public schools for over 30 years.

Carolyn married her high school sweetheart Karl Johns and upon retirement they moved to Sanibel Island, Florida. They spent 25 happy years enjoying island activities and traveling the world. As an avid bird watcher she became a volunteer rover at Sanibel's Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge for over 20 years. With time to indulge in her painting, Carolyn became an award winning artist. She was a member of the Sanibel Captiva Art League and after her move to Shell Point in 2018, became a member of the Shell Point Art Guild. At Shell Point she was a wildlife narrator on a tour boat called the Suzy Q, putting her naturalist level knowledge of the area to good use.

Carolyn loved her painting and wildlife activities but her family was the most important part of her life. She felt very fortunate for the opportunity to see her two grandsons grow up on Sanibel Island.

She leaves behind a sister, Patricia Specht, also at Shell Point, and her son David with his wife Melissa, grandsons Ryan and Tyler, nieces and nephews, and many good friends all over the world.

During her final months her family and friends provided much love and support, and being the true traveler that she was, Carolyn even worked in a trip to Yellowstone shortly before her passing. She truly showed us how a life could best be lived.
